View Full Version : Vinni Smith and Ariel Pozzo collaboration

In '00 at the old PRS Forum there was a project going where Vinni Smith, Greigg Fraser (a great Canadian guitar player) and myself would collaborate on a song. That project never materialized.
Fast forward, 2005. I email Vinni and ask him if he still have that song we were going to do together. He had done it all by himself, but graciously agreed to leave some room for me to fit into.
Vinni sent his song to me, I recorded a solo, some octave melody doublings and a few licks and sent it back.
Vinni then mixed the guitar I sent into his multitrack project, and here it is...Sunny Side Up, a song composed by Vinni Smith, performed by Vinni Smith and guesting yours truly: Here (http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=3623&alid=-1)
The song begins with Vinni playing the main melody, I then play the lower octave guitar, the first solo and after that Vinni and I trade licks back and forth.
I used my '91 Fender Deluxe Strat Plus, an '87 Ibanez Session Man pedal into a Marshall patch on my POD XT Pro. I guess Vinni will post here what he used.
Overall, I'm humbled Vinni allowed me to play on his song...a true gentleman, and a better musician. Thanks Vinni!! :)

You guys need to do some more tracks together. You both played off of each other so well. It was really a fun song to listen to.

Ariel, believe me, the peasure and honor was all mine!!! I only hope this is the first of many songs we record together. I have always adored your playing and this time your playing really touched my soul.
Guys, I sent this song to Ariel and the next morning he sent it back with his part on it! Less than 24 hours! Can you believe that? Good work and ideas just flow from this man. He was patient and polite in every step of this project, even when I would ask him a thousand dumb questions. Listen to that tone and technique! I can't play like that. It really is a trip to write and record a song and have an artist like Ariel play and create with you. I really like the direction you took this song into, Ariel. It gave the tune another dimension than it had before. BTW, my wife and daughter loved it too!
As for equipment,
I recorded it on Cakewalk Home Studio 2004
I played my Santana I for the opening rythym guitar
The lead melody was played on the '96 Santana I as well.
The middle bridge licks were played on a '92custom24 with Dragon Is
I ran thru a Rolland Cube 30 with no pedals. Just from the recording out jack. I keep the volume very low when recording.
Oh, yeah, I used an old, green guitar chord that my wife bought me way back in '95 when she bought the custom 24. Heh heh
I think that was it.
Glad all you guys liked it. I do hope to work with this man again soon.......
Thank you, Ariel
Guys thankyou so much for that great track!! It's Friday morning here in the UK and you have just set me up for the weekend!!!

Nice collaboration chaps. Must admit that it was not what I was expecting. Assumed it would be some trillion miles per hour thing, instead I got some great soulfull playing by both of you. Fabulous, lovely tones, with a melody and call and response too:dude:

Frankie, I guess you should scrap that whole "custom amp" idea, and get you one of these...

Blown away guys!!! That was just great! And all that killer tone was from a Pod and a roland cube!! LOL AWSOME!!!! Just more proof that the real tone lies in the digits that are hitting the strings and has very little to do with your equipment.

Great stuff! Both of you sounded fantastic. You just proved the point that tone and quality is in the fingers ..and not in the gear.
