Hi,
I haven't been in a band for a few years and miss playing with other musicians. I work solo with backing tracks (I know, it shouldn't be allowed!) and gig 2 or 3 times a week.
Are there any bands in SE England (Hertfordshire/North London) that need a lead guitarist/lead singer for odd gigs/rehearsals/sessions? Or just jams!
I have great gear, including a PA. And I'm past 40 years old, but look ok and still going strong!
REgards,
Julian.

For anyone wondering, I have heard this man play, and he is damn good at what he does!

I'd pick him up in a heart beat!

Peace,
Aldwyn

I thought you had a party/function band on the go ? or am I way behind the times ?

Shame you weren't in the North East, we could've traded licks :D.

Hi Ainsley,

No mate, I left the band ages ago. I too wish you were closer, for jams etc. Roger is the only guy I see regularly, and we really go for it when we get together. He likes coming to my house 'cos we can play REALLY LOUD! Ho ho!
Maybe I'll host a small UK forum do here one day in the summer. Could manage 6-8 people I think.
Cheers,
Julian.

REgards,
Julian. Julian

We have a fortnightly jam, on Sundays, at a place called Thornborough, near Buckingham. Not sure how far away it is from you, but you are very welcome to join in. I usually play with a sort of resident band, singer/guitarist, bass and drummer and me. I normally accompany others as well. Next one is this coming Sunday. I usually get there around 7 to set up my stuff and we start about just gone 8.

Both bands I am sort of in, are still in very much a practice phase and not that serious, or even that good. My trouble, at the moment, is my day-job. I do tend to be busy during the week, and often away from home, so only available to play weekends (sometimes Friday and Saturday).

If you do gig around my way and in desperate need of someone else to join in with you, give me a shout. I have good gear, way past 40 and lost my looks and hair years ago. Shame I couldn't pop across to St Neots in Dec.

Hi John,
Thanks for the invitation. Buckingham is about 1hr 45m from me, which is about as far as I would go for a gig these days, but perhaps I'll come and join in one day. But not this Sunday 'cos I'm gigging already.
The ST Neots gig went well (used my new PS!).
And I'm playing in Northampton on May 21st, at the Foundry Tavern, 135 St James St., so stick that in your diary with a note to bring your Cu22 Soapy for a jam. I'll let you know if one comes in before that of course.
Regards,
JC

Regards,
JC Julian, date in diary. Northants is easy for me. Would love to have a jam, assuming my meagre skills are up to yours. I've heard Roger play, so if you are anywhere like him, I may be too scared and leave the guitar in the case. ;).

Drop me an email, if you have any earlier ones. Mid week is awkard at the moment, as spending a lot of time in Liverpool, unless you get one in the Cavern of course ;)

And we could always go and see the lovely Rob Owen...
Meagre skills eh? And even if they were, which I doubt, could you still leave the guitar in the case? Got you there; you couldn't, could you? Even if Roger was there! I think I'll drag him along as my roadie for that one (with all of his guitars too!) and put you to the test. You'd get up and play, you know you would. You grew up playing most of my set I'll bet.
Cheers mate.

Hey John
Julians an ace player but not as fascinated in the 80's widdly stuff as I am so he plays far more tastefully and considered than I do - a bit like I recall you doing. I spread my interests far too thinly! Anyway I've seen you play and you can hardly be classified as lacking confidence.

Rog, no problem with confidence, its ability that occasionally lets me down.

Hope you can make it to Northants in May, would be nice to meet up and may be have a little play.

See below, Julian says he is going to ask you to be his roadie for when he plays Northampton on May 21st, at the Foundry Tavern, 135 St James St.

Sorry - just made the connection with the earlier dialogue - a bit slow today. I thought you were planning a group meet. He's kidding about the roadie bit as he's heavily regimented about how things go out of and into his tour vans (I mean car - although its a big one!). Quote organised for a musician type really. :D

Where is he anyway - its his thread? Also we half planned to go into St Albans to see some live music tonight (which you're welcome to join of course).

Sorry Rog, would have loved to, but have to go over my daughter's house this evening.

Hey Rog,
Thanks for the compliments mate, but they're really not necessary, you can come and play my guitars whenever you like! Seriously though, thanks. If my performances are OK they merely demonstrate that determination and long experience really can triumph over modest talent!
I'm a bit worried about the "heavily regimented" bit. OK, so I'm fussy about my gear, opinionated about how stuff should be lifted, loaded, packed etc, and I assault people who touch my guitars without permission... yeah, you're right! Quite like the "organised", very important for a muso, and so few are.

On another note,
I broke a string on stage last night! Not notable you say? It is for me; I haven't broken a string on stage in at least 15 years!

I'm with you on this one Julian. I hate those people who just throw all their leads into a bag, after a gig, and then spend hours at the next gig, trying to unravel them. Believe it or not, I have cable tidy's !! I also wipe my fret board and back of neck down after each gig, either at the event or when I get home. Bit sad, but look after your tools etc.

Aaah I see. Well he must have made a big contribution because he probably has a server dedicated just for his posts.

Come on Jo, he talks sense! And how many posts from Jo? Fortunately, you talk sense too! In fact, so do most people on the forum, which is just as well. Though some of the American humour mystifies me a bit!
Well here I go, derailing my own thread. Has anybody found me a band yet? Preferably playing songs that I already know, with four gigs a week @ £400 per person per gig, with van and driver, two roadies and regular groupies. Actually, forget the groupies. You know you're getting old when you'd rather have a roadie than a groupie!
Cheers,
JC

LMAO :dude:

What do you do in your solo set?Hi Ripcom,
I play and sing stuff by Clapton, Gary Moore, Santana, Steely Dan, Eagles, Paul Weller, Oasis, Hendrix and other guitar based stuff, with backing tracks on minidisc. It's great 'cos I get to do exactly what I want, when & where I want, and it's less work (for the same dosh) as my last band. But I miss playing with others and having a laugh at rehearsals and gigs. Swings and roundabouts I suppose.
How about you?
JC
Ps. Had a disastrous gig in Weymouth once, I'll tell you about it one day!

Steely Dan!!!! I doff my hat to you.:dude:

I have a band a play with on a regular basis that do allsorts from The Cult, David Bowie, The Stones, Ash, Zepplin, Green Day, etc. Just a good time pub band.

I've just come in from a rehearsal this evening with a band that are doing just Toto material, which is still waiting for the singer to arrive. (Febuary now so I'm told)

I also have a Black Sabbath tribute that has just reformed with a new bass player, which we are looking to get gigging as soon as possible.

So all in all I have a busy time of it. Never enough gigs though.

Where in Weymouth did you play? sound interesting:eek:

What a busy lad you are! Quite a selection of material.
Steely Dan are, without question (don't anybody dare disagree with me!) the best band ever, anywhere! I can manage several of their easier tunes.
The Weymouth gig was a long time ago, in a club or hotel, can't remember where. The day before we'd had a photo shoot in the singer's antique shop. We wanted to use an ornate oil lamp as a prop, with an antique round tablecloth, but didn't have a round table. So we used the cymbal case on top of the drumstool. When we were setting up in Weymouth the next day we realised the cymbals and stool were still under the tablecloth in London. Have you ever tried to gig without cymbals? No crash, no hi-hat? And our drummer had to sit on a plastic chair that kept sliding all over the place. We gave our girl singer a tambourine and told her to play it non stop. At the end of the night she was exhausted ,and black and blue on her arms and legs, with blisters on her hands! Disaster.
