Anyone have or had time with the Boss BR-1600CD.
I'm thinking of getting something along these lines at some point this year. There are similar boxes from Zoom, Yamaha, Tascam and Korg but the Boss is standing out at the moment.
Unless you know better:)

I recently sold mine to a fellow BaM member. It's a very well designed unit, and I never had a problem with it. I think it wins over all the other brands due to the fact that it has 8 XLR inputs, while the others don't. The manuals are well written, and easy to understand. A good piece of kit as they say. :) The only reason I sold mine is that I decided that amp and guitar GAS were no longer enough, so I had to come down with recording gear GAS, and go with a full blown computer based system..... ;)

I'd like to be able to take what ever I get along and be able to record the whole drum kit at rehersals.
Again the Boss seems like it will fit the bill.
Fortunately our drummer has all the mics so that's one less exspence:)

I have a BR-1180, which is pretty much the same with less tracks and inputs. I use mine all the time; it really has an intuitive user interface and is extremely reliable. Has built in mastering tools and makes it real easy to burn CDs. Highly recommended.

I have been trhough the same search, finally I got one on layaway at GC, I expected to picked up next month for my B-day. Still seems to be one of the best but the Tascam 2488 o wathever number it is seems also prety good, the fact that has everything to start recording ready is what is moving me toward this model, the BR-1600CD. Good luck.

I love my BR118OCD it is easy to use and I would have to guess that the new one is only better!

I haven't looked at the BOSS 1600 - it wasn't out when we were looking for a recorder, but the Yamaha AW16 that we use has been good. Although the AW16 can record 8 channels simultaneously, it only has 2x XLR mic inputs, the rest are TRS jacks. So if you needed phantom power on more than 2 mics, that might affect your decision.

What are the effects on the unit? I love chorus, delay and flanger. I would imagine the sound quality is the same as the stomp boxes?

The quality of the sound is very good, same with the drums, I think they got the new software version 2 available with some more stuff. My only complain (and maybe due to the lack of knowing better the system) is that I think they should sound a little louder on my hearphones, anyway, that maybe help me to save so hearing anyway.
I'm also looking now to get he DR-880 that one also sounds ver good, great effects and very easy to program, the rythms are very, very good.

I just picked up a br1600 last week. I was in Phoenix and they had a big memorial day sale at GC, so I got a new one for $1100.
I like it, BUT mine seems to have a loud hard drive noise (high pitched) when starting up, does anyone else have similar experiences? Other than that it has no problems. I haven't used it too much while on vacation, but I did pick up some of the British mags that have CD backing tracks, recorded the backing track to Floyd's Money and got a reasonably good tone out of my PRS using the COSM modeling to lay down rhythm and lead tones (yes I took my guitar on vacation). I was thinking of getting a br 1200 or a digital multitrack without the built in guitar effects, but just couldn't pass up the 1600 at that price.
I'll post some clips when i get a chance.

Hi grego7, I got the same magazine, and also a big Pink Floyd fan, I want to do the same with Time, but how do you do that? just direct recording? I haven't had time to play as much with mine yet...

It's really easy and kind of a cool feature. You just press the CD button on the right part of the br-1600, and then one of your menu choices is play / import. You import the track you want, and it asks you where you want it imported. the best way is just to open a new song (empty), then import to track 9/10. Everything stays exactly in the stereo spectrum as it is on the disc, and you can adjust the volume of the backing track that way (when just playing the disc, I'm not sure if you can adjust the level - I would assume you can, but I don't know how yet). I agree with one of the previous posters - when using the COSM guitar modeling, the levels are too low; this way you can turn down the backing and turn up the master to hear the guitar better.

Thanks grego7!, I need to give it a try, and by the way I was the one complaining about the low volume of the COSM, but still sound really good! thanks for the tip and how to use this feature!
I'm thinking to add a DR-880 too and try with my "midnigth guitar snack" setting of a ADA MP-1, quadraverb plus and equalizer but I think that may be a little too noizy, anyway I think I will try to set up everything tonight.
Thanks!

From what I've figured out so far, volume issues can be corrected different ways by tweaking the effects levels (gain, etc). Just mess with it, once you see how it works, there will be no volume problems. And just to let you know how stupid I am, I just figured out last week that they had drum loops on the machine! I had been using the drum machine instead. I was downloading stuff of the drum cd and figured out it was already loaded in the machine. Of course you know I had to go back and correct my mistakes. Will they ever make a good instruction manual? MIstakes aside, this machine is incredible and is the best money I've spent in a long time. Thank goodness recorders have gotten away from tape. I guess I need to trash my 4 track Tascam!
