Let me start by saying that I am incredibly easy on my gear; anyone who has been to my studio will tell you that.
So.
My Sony flatpanel display monitor crapped out on Friday, during an important session, after being in my studio for exactly 15 months.
This is the fourth piece of relatively new Sony equipment that has crapped out on me recently. First, a television video monitor; second, one of their higher end CD players; third, one of their top VHS models that I used occasionally for dubbing copies of my reel from U-matic to VHS.
Incredible. The only thing I have left in my studio that is Sony that actually works is a ten year old U-matic Sony Professional videotape machine. That thing is bulletproof.
Ask me if I would even consider their new digital console.
Um, no thanks.

I bought one of Sony's most expensive Vaio laptops...spent over $1800.00... and it has been nothing but trouble....mainly problems with overheating. Next time it's Toshiba or Dell for me.

>>mainly problems with overheating.<<
I suspect that overheating is the culprit on my monitor as well; if I turn the gear off for a few hours, and come back, the monitor works until it warms up.

Next time it's Toshiba or Dell for me.I just got a Sony Vaio laptop too at the end of last year (their Xbrite screen one for $2500) we returned the first one because it had a key that kept sticking. So far the replacement has worked great even tho' you probably get less than an hour of battery life, but we knew battery life was going to be crap when we bought it (just not that crap), but it's always plugged in. It's a heavy big beast, not really meant for travelling around with.
I was thinking of upgrading my old Dell to a Sony desktop system with their flat panel screen, but after reading Les's experience, I think I just may go with Dell again (I've had over 5 Dell pcs/laptops and never had any serious probs).
Shame.... :(

It's unfortunate but Sony's quality has gone compleatly down the toilet over the last 5-7 years. I left the company about two years ago after working as a field service engineer with thier pro audio group for 12 years. When I started we went out fixed the problem and moved on, by the time I left I spent more of my time convicing managment we needed to resolve issues than it took to acually resolve them. The DMX-R100 is a great console for the money, but God help you if you have a problem with it!!!

I've never had any luck with anything that said Sony on the front. I learned my lesson years ago. I'm in the market for a new PC, and my brother suggested a VAIO last week. Thanks for this reminder.
I just bought a Dell XPS system with a 23" flat screen monitor/TV. I've bought so many Dell systems for my company and home, I've lost count.
Anyway, the monitor had a flaw - not critical but annoying.
After some highly entertaining back-and-forth with Dell's AI email support, I picked up the phone, got a human in seconds. The next day, a brand new, perfect monitor was on my doorstep and, in a few hours, fedex came back and took the old monitor away.
I am a cynical, warhorse veteran of tech support. It takes a lot to impress me. I was impressed.

Aren't Dells monitors just a rebadged Sony?
I like Dells tech support too. They've always been good to me (even when I'm just out of the 1 year warranty).

Dell uses Samsung heavily among a couple of others.
