View Full Version : Rubber grip thingies for doing volume swells
Well in a continuation of a thread I raised in the old BAM about getting some sort of rubber thing to put on the volume knob for doing volume swells I've got the perfect solution thanks to forum member Donnie Kepley who sent me exactly what I wanted.
He had some old Ibanez Iceman knobs (gold hat shaped ones) which had a rubber grip strip installed around them. Well the knobs didn't fit the PRS, but if you just pulled the rubber grips off, they stretched and fit perfectly over the PRS knobs.
Previously I had tried rubber bands and bits of balloons, but they weren't permanent solutions. Now this is.
Here are a couple of pics

So they look good as they blend in with the black PRS knobs and work like a dream. Now I just need to find out where I can get more so I can put them on all my PRSi (then I can get rid of my Ernie Ball volume pedal) .
Thanks again Donnie. Just goes to show, this is a great place to hang out (and I can't believe all y'all here like guitars too ;) ).

Most excellent! But doesn't the Piezo control need a little love too? ;)

They look the biz Jo, glad you got it sorted :D
I think some Ibanez knobs ahd a similar design in the eighties.
OOPS ... did I just say 'knob' can I have the first new BAM thwappin' ?

JamieThe one that was on the piezo got pulled off and put on my Archtop... and the one on the tone knob will be going to my CE-24. Now I just need to get a few more to go on my other PRSi. :D
BGG, you'd certainly have got a thwappin, if you used the words "knob", "rubber" and "swell" in the same sentence. ;) Hee hee.
The "knob swells" thread was my favorite thread from the old BAM.
I didn't get any work done for days during that one. Thousands of words from just one picture.

Big Ginger Git got it right - I sent you an e-mail, Jo. Those were Ibanez knobs off of my old Iceman that was the first electric I ever bought back in '78.
I had 4 of those knobs lying around, one of which was broken, so I sent the other 3 along to Jo. Just before mailing them out, I tried pulling the rubber thingy off the knobby and sure enough, stretch it out a bit and it fits right over the PRS knob. Works great on the 5-way on my '94 St22 G/Mt.

That's great Jo, and the knobs look like they came from the factory that way. Sweet!

They look great Jo!
To be honest, when I first read your previous post about getting them I thought "Cool idea but not on MY guitar". Consider my opinion changed.

She had amber knobs, still has 'em I guess.
Rubber thingies really help with volume swells. If your hands sweat, those smooth speed knobs can be dicey. I've never had a problem, because unlike today's "every need must be addressed" attitude, I always learned to make do. There wasn't nearly the aftermarket craze that there is today, so I just had to learn on whatever was on the guitar.
Fender knobs, both the strat knobs and knurled tele knobs are far superior for volume swells, though, to be sure. Also, my hands don't sweat, and if they did, I'd have rubber thingies as well, or knurled knobs of my choice.

The reason for wanting the grips is that my hands DO sweat, and they sweat buckets (I think I need that operation). It's so bad that if I get really nervous my hands will just run and drip down to my elbows. :(
But hey Tyrone, you should be proud of me. I'm now doing my volume swells with the knob and not with my Ernie Ball volume pedal. :D

Jo, I am indeed proud of you for ditching that pedal. Now go get yourself some amber knobs!
Tweak, one thing I've learned from teaching for 25 years or so, is that we're all wired differently. Sure, some sweat because they're nervous, and some just sweat due to the activity of playing guitar. I know an excellent guitar player with many years' stage experience that sweats like crazy. It's just his makeup. He's not nervous. He sweats so much that I won't let him play a guitar of mine if it has new strings, because he'll toast 'em. He's got the dreaded "alien sweat". Not only did his hands sweat a lot, it was extremely corrosive, the double whammy! I don't know which category Jo falls into.

I'm kinda moving backwards as I use my volume pedal more and more. In self defense though, I think it's a function of doing more 'volume stuff' in general.
After reading this I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled for some knurled knobs or rubber 'things'. Maybe that'll boost my confidence in reaching for the knob on the fly.
