I was wondering if any of you have experienced these tubes. I have a Fender Blues DeVille with GT ecc83 in the drive channel. I like the GT12AX7 in my 68 Bassman head.

I was gonna do tube jobs and Bob at Eurotubes recommends using the ECC83 by JJ in the Deville.

Is there a tonal difference between the JJ ecc 83 and the GT ecc83?

What is the tonal difference between the ecc83 and a 12ax7? Some say the ecc83 is hotter, more gain-y. Is this true? Every ecc83 I have seen says 12ax7 also.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any replies.

Decades ago there was a slight difference. Today, they are the same exact tube.
All vendors get their tubes from three factories: china, russia and yugoslavia. So the differences in tone come from the different factory of origin. The chinese ones are midrangy and shrill. The yugoslavian ones are warm but microphonic. The russian ones are lifeless and sterile. I prefer the russian tubes the better overall, but nothing beats a NOS tube.
Hey Ariel, why do you prefer the Russian ones if their lifeless and sterile ?

My guess would be because they're neither shrill nor microphonic. A compromise, but a necessary one IMHO.
