I've pretty well decided I've got to dive into the amp modeling/digital realm of guitardom. I think I'll keep it simple and go with a guitar port. I like the idea of onscreen amp controls as well as the online features and the really groovy looking Riff Tracker that's supposed to be out any time now.
More to the point, I'll need some respectable powered monitors for my computer. I know if I wanted to spend $6-800 you folks could recommend something very pro quality like Mackie HR624s (I read a thread here some months ago that convinced me of their merit).
What about in the $100-300 range; any recommendations or sage advice on what to avoid?
How about buying one 'killer' monitor and running mono? Would I find out later that is a stupid idea?

Thanks Much

I've got a pair of Fostex PM-1's which I use for my GPort. They sound pretty good and have been reliable in the last 2 years that I've had mine.

A pair of these should be a little over $300.

There's some Roland ones that came out a couple of months ago that are supposed to be really good, can't remember the model number but they were on the web site.
I just use headphones and I get canny enough results :D.

Thanks for the responses.

I hadn't seen the Fostex before. I'll keep those in mind.

The Roland's had caught my eye: the DS30, 50, and 90s. They have digital inputs that may be overkill, but their marketing material impressed me somehow.

What has really, really caught my eye just the past few hours are some KRK RP-5s a guy has listed on TGP. From what I can gather, KRKs are some pretty fancy pants stuff. Wonder how these little 5 incher, economy KRKs stack up?

Hey Tom,

Just an fyi...I'm not a big fan of monitors for this type application. If you are looking for a live output of stereo or surround music, keep in mind monitors will flatten the signal's eq. I'm sorry if you know this already, I just don't want to see someone who was dissappointed in the output of monitors because you were expecting speakers.

If you are going with serious PC Speakers you can look at paradigm and many other's in your price range. Don't forget the powered woofer.
