I've seen some harem pics from you guys that are amazing. But here's the scenario..... you gig and need a guitar that will cover all types of music. You can only bring one guitar that feels the best and covers the sound range. What's your choice?? What's your #1?

I currently have a Custom 24, SC Trem and a modified Les Paul.
I dread a gig where I can only bring 1 - I would probably prefer using my SCT and LP. But if I can only have 1, it would probably be my Custom 24.

right now my number 1 is the first guitar I built. It has a SD jb in the bridge, a SD jazz in the neck, and a SD strat single in the center. Both buckers have series/split/parrallel mini switches, the single coil has a on/off mini switch, and the buckers also run off a gibson toggle so you can get tons of different pickup choices.

A gig that I can only bring one guitar? Is that 'cos the drummer's filled up the van with cases and bags.........and pies?
It would have to be my CU22 'cos I don't play anything else now except when I brake a string mid set. But so long as I keep a new set on there that doesn't happen often.:)

Tough call. A toss-up between my HB2 and my G&L ASAT Z-3. The Z-3 has 3 pickups and a wider sonic palette with it's out-of-phase sounds. But I'd probably go with the HB-2, which gives me amazing blues, jazz, country and rock sounds. Not quite as versatile but a bit fatter and sweeter all around.

My overall #1 is Klein Electric #KG-166 -- chambered swamp ash body, Barden H/S/H pickups (humbuckers are "2-tone" which have a great single coil sound as well) and a Guatemalan rosewood neck. Oh, and a Steinberger S-trem.
Of course, for any given gig, any of my guitars might serve as #1-of-the-moment.

For most people, are these number one's for pure tone? Or a combo of tone and you don't care if nick it up a little?
I still play my Black Strat the most, not the greatest sound, sounds good, but I don't care if I muff it up!

Tone and playability.

My #1, the '92 CU24, w/t, is a comfort thing. I'm 'home' when I play that guitar. Has some road rash on it too, and I'm sure it will get more. The absolute best tone machines I've played are only marginally better tonally.
It's blue which, of course, is the best color. ;) Also decked out with birds and a super tiger stripe ten top so it's the whole package. Back in the day I frequently got the coment, "that looks like the one on the catalog". Remember the old early 90's brochure with three customs on it, one royal blue, one scarlet red and one vintage yellow (IIRC)?

It's a combination of things for me with the Klein:
1. it was custom built for me by someone familiar with my playing style
2. it's very versatile
3. it's the most comfortable guitar I've ever played
4. I really like the tones
5. it's extremely easy to schlep around (compact; in a gig bag; goes in the overhead bin on an airplane)
However, it became most apparent to me what my number one guitar was when I was recording my CD. I tried using a number of different guitars for some of the electric parts. When I listened back it was clear that I really sounded like me with the red Klein in a way that didn't happen so much with the other guitars.
As for "nicking it up," I'm not really one for the beaten-to-hell look (although I do own a relic Strat; more because it's a freakishly great sounding Strat than because of the relic thing) but I quite like when my guitars start to get some playing wear that I put there.

I find the Switcharoo system simple to use, fast and intuitive. I love it live. This is my main electric for all my live work now. And for recording. And for... well, everything. :D
Once you get the sounds down in your head in the different switch positions; it is quite simple. I only use one or two or three single coil sounds most of the time and often use the Blower switch for solos and such.
In the rock covers band, I still might opt for the Hamer/PRS thing if my role was the same in that band. But this guitar could do most all that (minus that essential neck humbucker thing of course).

I normally gig with 3 very different PRSi and 1 Strat. If I could only take one it would definitely be my Singlecut. It's just an all around workhorse for me that seems to fit every style I play. I can get just about every sound I'm looking for out of it with my current setup.

My Warmoth Telecaster w/Harmonic Design Z-90's.
It can go from a thick, warm neck tone, to a great P-90ish growl in the bridge, with the inbetween position sounding vaguely like a Telecaster. It does get a bit noisy around any kind of fluorescent (sp?) light, so it is a little unmanagable at times, but the tone usually outweighs that.

The McRosie in my avatar is like a dremel. Versatile, fast action, great feel and it gets the job done in a professional manner...
My strat with the little '59 in the bridge is more like a hammer. The 'bucker is the pounding end and the bridge pickup is the claw end. Not as smooth or sophisticated but it gets the job done too.

I've seen some harem pics from you guys that are amazing. But here's the scenario..... you gig and need a guitar that will cover all types of music. You can only bring one guitar that feels the best and covers the sound range. What's your choice?? What's your #1? My choice for the scenario you described would be King Louie (an Archtop 2) with 57/08's and a push/pull tone pot through an EF86/EL84 amp. My number one, which does not fit the scenario, is a humble SE One with a Deep Dish 2 installed.

Pretty embarrassing - everyone is listing their custom modded one-off limited run with pickups hand-wired by a member of the Holy Trinity and a top selected by Rembrandt - from the grave, no less.
And while I have enough guitars to brag on, I still keep coming back to one, measley, simple-azz, drop dead ordinary guitar. That always ends up getting the most playing time, no matter what other axes I bring, or even what I'm playing.

Your amp has been the same for a lot of years now!!! I am almost proud that I had a very slight hand in it!!! LOL One of these days I am going to snag another one, as it would really compliment my SLO perfectly!
Yep. My first Shiva came from you. :)
I was looking for one because at Paul's 50th birthday party, Paul and Ralph P (PRS district rep for NE) asked me what Amp I was using. After they scoffed me a bit and told me to buy a real amp, I asked what they recommended. They told me to get a Dumble. I asked what I should get which wouldn't require a mortgage, and they said either a Two Rock or a Shiva (this was prior to the PRS amp line, obviously). Then, Ralph P graciously gave me a copy of his Alien Cowboys CD, and told me that it was recorded with a Shiva without effects. I was blown away with the tones!
I bought your Shiva EL34 head, sent it to Bogner to have a volume control for channel 2 boost. I later bought a newer one that had the boost volume control and worked on both channels. It's now my primary head, but I still use yours often. GREAT amps.
Thanks Bill!!!

Interesting - when I met Paul last month, he was trying to push his Original Sewell onto me. I told him no thanks - it sounded like mine. He asked what I had - I answered Shiva, and he just nodded his head and went "yeah, ok." ;)

What this guy is rockin(old birds included)
with a close #2 being a killer R0 Historic Lester loaded with 57/08s (That killed at rehearsal yesterday)
and #3 being a VERY resonant 1960 Relic Strat...(if I were a single coil guy, it would be #1)

To make Kevin happy, I could say this one:

But really, #1 is a movable target chez moi. Depends on the situation. Generally speaking, I think of whatever guitar I'm playing at the moment as my #1.
That said... ...if I do have one, it's this one.

5 years on and I still text my girlfriend to say how amazing this guitar is every time I play it.
She chose the colour, I chose the specs. :dude:

My CU22 w/ McCarty switching.
Ask this in december and I would have said my #1tele, but I really haven't played much else since I got it. Still digging my new Std24, but the CU22 is da bomb. Only guitar I have ever bought, I didn;t want to modify something in the first 20 mins.
The above post was pre-thorn.
