Hi Gang,

I haven't posted except for one thread in March. I finally moved the family to Charlotte after my building was blown up on 9-11. We arrived a little over a year ago and finally, everyone is okay as we left and my father in-law was dying and did pass away. Life sure has changed for everyone as compared to September 10th, 2001.

I'm playing acoustic guitar in a Dylan Tribute show. If ToneHound is still here, I finally found his e-mail. He'd know of The Evening Muse and likely the Tosco Music Party. I study with John Tosco if anyone is in Charlotte they likely know who John is. Nice guy!
I have a great sounding Martin D-41 and rather than using a K&K Pure Western Transducer and an L.R. Baggs M-1 pickup, it was suggested that I bring my D-41 and mic it. They just did it for Roy Bookbinder Saturday night and it sounded fine. But John T. said that if I had better mics, bring them. I'm planning on going to the open mics every month so I might as well sound my best because I need it. (g).

So for those out there who know about recording mics use in a live situation, would you go with the Neumann KMS 184 (Cardoid) or the KMS 185 which is a hypercardoid?

Thanks in advance,
Steve in Charlotte

p.s. I heard an utterly phenominal guitar player in a band on Saturday. They are The Contagious Blues Band and just won a competition in Charlotte. If Derek Trucks [who I just saw] is a 9.5, this 21 year old kid is an 8.5. They have 4 full tracks at their site. Their playing together is tight, tight, tight! It must be a dream to engineer these guys. I don't recall if this is okay. If not, I leave it to the moderator to delete this part. Give it a listen. There is no place on the site to buy their CD's so this isn't a plug for their sales as I don't know them. I'm just pointing out some damn fine music.

I would go for the 184 as it will give you a fuller sound and a smoother bass response.

I hyper cardioid is too tight for accoustic as you will have to get really close to it.

Thanks Gary,

It seems like unless I were able to A/B them and return the one I don't want, that I have to play it safe and go with the KMS184

Thanks,
