(I can't even remember who makes these...)
Does anyone own one? Ever tried one?
I'd like to know how it affects the guitar's tone. Does it boost and focus the bottom end? I'm looking for something to punch up my PRSi' low end.
Also, does it sound better in the loop or up front?
Thanks!

I had one. I sold it.
It does what it is supposed to do. I just didn't feel a need for it. Works great in the loop and in front of the amp.
Aphex makes it; it is called the "XCiter" pedal.
I have another one for my acoustic guitars. I am undecided whether or not I like it.
It extends the highs and lows without it sounding too pumped up or hot on the high end.
My feeling is that my sounds are fine without it and the pedal doesn't make it better; just different.
Just my opinion.

Would this be like one of those old Boss Enhancer pedals?

You might want to try a compressor ( some ross clone I guess) I use the HBE CPR, and it seems to focus everything, and add a bit of warmth. I never turn it off anymore. Just set a bit on the subtle side, and everything smoothed out as well as focused the low end a bit.
As to exciter....Shrug?

eXciters are okay, and do what they do pretty well, but they distort certain frequency ranges to get the effect.
I recommend the BBE Sonic Maximizer, which seems to produce a similar but more natural, less processed sound.

I'll also throw in a vote for the BBE Maximizer. I've played with it 3 times now, and like it - it tightened up the bass, and gave it a more aggressive sound (for the music I'm playing, modern rock-type stuff). :dude:

I'll give you $25 for it ;)

I've got the Boss Enhancer EH2. Also a Tokai Exciter.
They don't do anything to the low end.
The Boss takes your high end and kind of slightly phases it for a little shimmer. You can blend the effect with dry and adjust sensitivity so it only kicks in at volume. It sounds nice, I use it at the end of the chain and use it very sublety. It sounds like crap if you mix it in too much, but just a little sounds nice.
The Tokai does about the same thing but instead of a sensitivity control, it has a frequency control so you can adjust the taper a little more. It really does not sound as good as the Boss. As a matter of fact it's about to make a reappearance on eBay.

What versions of the sonic maximizer do you recommend? There's a bunch of different model numbers, but I've had no luck getting a real answer to their differences in the past.

I use a BBE Maximizer as well, It's the 362. Less than C-note At GC, and a 500.00 improvement in sound. Imagine taking a wet blanket off your speaker cab! I also use one of the new Aphex Punch factory comps. Two of the best investments I have made this year. The Aphex has a drive adjustment that also can act as a Vol. boost if you set it properly. A great compressor for the dough.

I wanted to ask about the Punch Factory. Is it just a cool compressor, or does it really add punch?

I think it has alot to do with the dirve knob. It also has the Vol. adjustment. If you read the manual it says the drive allows you to set the amount of compression. I have found that if you kick up the Drive/Comp. it can serve as a vol. boost as well. pretty cool for an all in one unit. It's very quiet untill you set the drive past 7 and I dont feel it colors my amps sound.. Ithink it's alot of bang for your buck. I just orderd a THD hot plate in the blind, not to steal anyones post, but does anyone have experience with one?

Had one, sold it. It depends on which amp/cab you use, and the sound you're looking for. It's a great unit, but I got it, and then realized I didn't need it. I really liked my Mark IV better without it.
