Of course they were. How many times have we heard that PRS are the Stradivarii of today.

Nice flamey arse on that one! :dude:
And it's a 'hollowbody' too. I wonder if it has a piezo :D

Here is Izhak Perlman's Stradivri of 1714. I don't know if Antonio stradivari pioneered the technique of bookmatching figured maple, but it is very possible.

Another Stradivarius, note the one piece back and flamed neck. One has to wonder, if he were alive today would he embrace CNC technology?

Another thing that a lot of folks don't know is that Stradivari aso made guitars.

http://piazza.iae.nl/users/ckruijer/stradivarius1688.jpg

This is one of the rare guitars of the famous violin luthier Antonio Stradivarius. It shares the simple elegancy with the violins of the same master. At the back side of the head the date is 1680 or 1688. On the back side this instrument has the same 'curly maple' which can also be found on the violins. The binding is made of ebony.

I heard that Izhak Perlman used to claim that even though it wasn't stamped, the flame on his Strad would surely be considered a 10-back by later standards. Well, that's what I heard. Plus he used to brag about it being "pre-factory". (Note the smaller heel.) In fact, when Stradivari moved from his original shop to the factory in Cremona, a lot of changes occurred. Prince Edward, a diminutive Roman, has written several books on the topic.

Oh, and when Stradivari moved to Cremona, he changed the name of his business to the Cremona Big Store. He was obviously trying to compete with the large, well-known chain called Violin Center. Anyway, that's where the term Pre-CBS Strad comes from.

That must have been about the same time as the demise of the Stradivarius Forum. Only to have a new one to spring up from the ashes callled "Bards and Moans"!:D

I also read somewhere that Paul visited the Smithsonian and they let him examine several Stradivarius Instruments. I bet he was like a kid in a candy store!

I bet he was like a kid in a candy store! If my memory serves me correctly, at the Smithsonian, they had 3 Stradavarius violins with a special edging ... can't remember what it was, but I think it didn't look unlike a herringbone pattern  . There were only 5 made and the Smithsonian has 3 of them:dude: ....or was it 7 and they have 5? I need a repeat visit ... talkin' of which!!

I have stopped playing it about 7 years ago, you wouldn't want to hear me playing. Trust me on this ;)
