A lot of bands out there perform "Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry. Now my band wants to learn it also.
Does anybody know the "real" chord changes for the part coming out of the chorus over the words...
"Lay down the boogie and play that funky music till you die."
sincerely,
White Boy

I don't play any chords at that point. I just double the melody.
I don't have a guitar to double check on, but something like this...
E-------------------------------------
B-------------------------------------
G------------------------------5-7----
D------------------------------4-6----
A--7-5---5---------------------5-7---
E------7---7-5-7-7-5-7-5-3-0---------
We just started learning this song this week too, and I almost posted this exact same question a couple days ago. However, I got the correct chords from Tyrone.
For that chorus part, it's a
singing last line
G9 ..Play that funky music
Bb7 .... "White boy"
C9 x32333 "Lay down the boogie and"
x4545x "play that funky music till you" (forget what that chord's called .. .A something)
x76777 "Die" then you're right back in the E9 riff again.
Or it something like that, I don't have my guitar with me right now so hopefully I'm not a fret off. I'll confirm it later. (edit: I think it's ok now - Hope it makes sense for you).
Now go funk away. I have to say that riff is a killer on the finger pads. I have no corns on my ring finger pad, and funking away to it has given me a blister. Very sore, :(

That's what I would do too, when I used to play it... follow the melody!

Yep. No chords on that bit.
The guys have it right. I used to play that song alot about 10 years ago but we used to get this girl turn up and insist on singing it.
So we dropped it, for her own good:D

I think it would sound best if you had two guitars, and one played the melody as outlined in the tab, and the other played the chords Jo posted.
