Can any Virginia Bammers tell me what a carton of Kools cost in Virginia?
It's $57 a carton in Maryland (Food Lion) and I want to see if it's worth a trip to N.Va to pick them up once a month or so.

I am not a smoker, but am tired of getting reamed by the State of Maryland each time I pick them up for my wife. (She will not quit, period. So, please let's not go there.)

Thanks

In Sept. when Gina and went to her dads place in W. Virgina they were quite a bit cheaper than they were around Annapolis.

Smokes are anywhere from $5.80 to $7.38 a pack here in CT. A carton can cost from $53 to $70 at our local CVS pharmacy.

You'll find that CVS offers some of the least expensive prices compared to gas stations, food stores, etc. Not that I'm drumming up business for CVS (I do work there) but everybody in our town finds that we just offer cigarettes at the least expensive price.

Sometimes it's better to comparison-shop, then stick with the place that offers them at the least price.

FWIW, CT has a significant sales tax on our smokes, but not nearly as great as NY state.

I'd just call around locally and find a place that offers them cheaper instead of driving to another state. All you need to do is call the store and ask what a carton of Kools costs at a store, then make note of it. Saves driving around looking for inexpensive smokes...;)

Midnight,
I may take you up on that one day. :)

Do you know of any legitimate places there doing mail order down there?
(I googled a lot of companies that won't even respond to my email questions. -Red flags to me.)

Also, the Indian reservations sound like a good idea, but I understand they provide purchase information to state governments...

I don't want to get political here, but most surveys I've seen indicate that smokers are predominately lower income. The taxes put on these people, via cigarette sales, is extremely regressive, imo. The additional monies gathered is going to the state coffers, it is not going to some poor families to help them pay their smoking related health bills.....
The states would collectively soil themselves if everyone stopped smoking and this huge revenue stream dried up.
(Ok, I'm off of my soap box now..,.)

I never have checked into internet sales. I made Camels for 37 years. Most of my smokes were free. Now that I'm disabled and have to buy em it hurts. I sympathise with you guys where they are $60 and $70 a carton.

Not 100% sure, but I believe that you can't mail order cigarettes. The States require tax to be paid on every pack/carton, so discount stuff is probably not available that way.

I don't smoke, but see the Neon Yellow "Discount Cigarette" places over the MD State line in PA all the time. Can't tell you if it's cheaper than here or not, but would imagine that it is, since Central PA is SO much cheaper to live than where I am in MD.

I think that a pack of decent quality smokes around this neck of the woods is close to $15 clams. Cheap ones are $13 and change.

I don't partake in the activity, myself.

It might be worth looking at prices in Delaware as well, my sister in law is a former smoker and she used to drive there all the time to buy cigarettes. There's lots of those discount cigarette stores once you cross the border.

No way! Wow =- glad I only pretended to smoke, back when I was 13 or so and they were a quarter a pack.

Around 6 bucks a pack here in IA - which is plenty. State has a 1 or 2 (?) dollar tax per pack, to fund "smoker awareness." Course, now, with budget shortfalls, it just goes to the general fund.

You know, I hate smoking.
I wish nobody smoked.
But the cold hard fact is that smokers are addicted to a drug.
An addict needs their drug and will pay any amount for it.
When our government, under the pretense of funding health care for smokers,
jacks the taxes up such an unbelievable amount, I find it unconscionable.
Statistically, most smokers are low income and are already having a difficult time getting by, especially in this economy. Addicts will go without food and necessities in order to feed their addiction...

States look at their cigarette tax revenue as an open check book.
I sincerely wish that all smokers would quit just so these blood sucking pimps would have to end their financial partnership with the cigarette companies.

Just a note:
As if the $2.00 a pack tax (Maryland) and $1.01 a pack tax (Feds) is not enough, on top of this, the total cost for each pack of cigarettes is then assessed a sales tax of 6% in the Free State.

Sorry for the rant. I'll get off of my soap box and grab a cup of coffee.
(Hope Maryland doesn't get a whiff of the potential tax bonanza they could get from coffee...)

Just saw this thread, sorry --- I buy in VA when we play Apehangers... just a quick trip over the Harry Nice bridge into Dahlgren VA. Name-brands (like Kools) just went up to (I think) 34 bucks a carton. Generics go for much less. So yeah, it's well worth it. Obviously I agree with you about Maryland (on this and many other topics), but let's not get too vocal -- we smokers are definitely the evil minority now.

My old stomping grounds - I worked on the naval base down there for a short period in the 80s. Sometimes I think I never should have moved back here. Other times, not so much.

From what I understand, cigarettes are still considerably cheaper than lung cancer.

Just sayin'.

I quit smoking 9 months ago...Yay...Anyway, I really wasn't sure if i wanted to quit or not, as I enjoyed smoking. I laugh hearing these prices cause I lived in NY for 45 years and know very well the cost. Although when I left, they were $4 a pack...lol...Anyway, in Florida when they raised the price of my brand from $2.75 to $4.25 in 6 months time, i couldn't afford to smoke anymore...:dude:

In Australia, they're about $13 for a pack of 20. I have since quit, but in 1995 the same pack was $4.70

They just tax the crap out of them here to encourage people to quit. $15 for a 6 pack of beer too.

Is it to encourage people to quit or to just fill their coffers?

$15 for a 6 pack of beer.
What kind of beer are we talking about here?

It's a bit of both really.
In regards to the beer, that's for a standard local 6 pack. A carton of the same beer will set you back around $40. A carton of Sam Adams will set you back $80. That's right - it's $21 for a six of Sam.

yep, it's 16-17 bucks for a good 6 pack here, too.
