I really dig Neil Peart. By far the best drummer I've ever seen or heard (and I've seen and heard many!). I also ride as a mode of transportation so I appreciate a good ride story.
Way cool story!:dude:
*noticing your avatar, I'll have to post a shot of the Gibson Marauder neck that I got from a Kiss show in 1978! Way cool artifact!

Thanks for the link. What an incredible story!
I'm curious if Alex keeps the dinosaurs on his amps and the Barbie herd on stage during the show, or if they're an inside joke the road crew sets up during warmups???

I can't remember how it started but the rotisserie was the first fun gag idea from Alex and Geddy. I know that Jack and Bucky set the Barbies and dinos out during sound check n I think they left them during the show. Geddy and Alex want them set up and I was told the story of what's behind the dinos and dolls but it kinda went in one ear and out the other. If you really want to know the full story behind this let me know and I can make a call to find out.

Fantastic story. Love Rush and always leave one of their gigs mesmerised by their musicianship.
Niel's drum solo on the R30 tour at the NEC in Birmingham, UK was a particularly special moment. This tour being the first undertaken in Europe since the events that lead to:eek: Neil becoming the ghost rider and his eventual re-emergence into 'normal' life. The ovation he received at the end of the solo was particularly touching, with a few grown men in the crowd around me in tears. It was an emotional moment, but also a solo of such intensity that announced in no uncertain terms that Peart was back. :)

I had front row seats for one of the Wembley shows on that tour. It was an absolutely outstanding gig - and one I'll never forget.:cool:

This quote about Neil Peart is my favorite from your link:
"It was mind-bending enough before he drummed in 3/4 time with his feet and 7/8 time with his hands... By any reasonable standard, this technique should be impossible. When I asked him whether the pattern coincided every 21 beats or every 32, he said it took him a very long time to learn to drum in this way, and he didn't dare think about how it actually worked!"
Glad to discover your writing, thanks for sharing.

Way cool. Looking over my concert stubs, the first time I saw Rush was in 1977 and I've seen them probably 30 times since!
I've never gotten tired of them and have only seen them get better and better. My dream would be to meet the three of them one day.

Then, it escalated to a set of Maytag coin operated dryers during "Vapor Trails" and then an Auto-mat was added during "R30" followed by the Hen House Chicken Rotisseries for "Snakes and Arrows."
There have always been toys on Alex's amps since he became a granddad. The dinosaurs and the barbies were a new thing, but it was actually worse than that last tour. Courtesy of Bucky, there were also plastic aquarium plants, fish, and other aquarium themed objects in the Triamps. That was on the Rush: Backstage Secrets DVD which really made me appreciate their excellent road crew.
I'd love it if you'd make that call and find out the whole story. That would be freakin' hilarious.

Ok I just got off the phone w JS and here's the scoop. You're right, the large stuff, dryers, rotisseries etc were primarily to balance out geddy's side w Alex rig. Most of the stuff obviously was injected for humor. The dinos were also for stage balance back to Alex's side so it draws attention there I guess it's like a pro furniture arranger would do. So the the Barbie Dolls. Bucky came up with them as a joke and they usually hold small obscure messages to the crew and group. For instance he said one night one held a note saying "so I had to blow Jack to get here". So the notes are little jokes and smart ass comments to keep it all lite.
Peace, Rockmark

Ugly, ugly motorcycles! :(
Ugly, heavy and gutless, but very capable and comfortable.
Sigh
I don't seem to have any problems with mine. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, etc. Personally, I care very little about how a motorcycle looks as long as it goes when I want it to, stops when I need it to, fits my fat ass, and is easy to work on. I have a buddy with a sport bike and I just laugh at him every time he has to work on it as he takes off yards of plastic. I can do 100% of my routine maintenance without even taking the gas tank all the way off.
Seriously, if you think BMWs are gutless, you've never ridden a K1200 or K1300 generation bike. Also, if you think they're comfortable, you've never experienced an R1100 generation stock seat - ow!!
Anyway.
I'm a member of BMWBMW (as you might have guessed by reading that thread - THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE CHIBA!) and have met Rick on several occasions. He's a great guy and a phenomenal writer. He took a spill a while back on another ride with Neil & has been off the bike since then. We're all hoping he heals quickly & gets back on two wheels.
He regularly contributes good stories & beautiful photographs to our forum there.

I think they are cool, too. I almost bought one in 1981 in Germany. I was not able to get insurance at the time because I was an enlisted soldier.:(
Anyway, I turned into a Goldwing fan and have a few:

Larry (Paintguy) coached me through a restoration of this one a few years ago. I'd never painted anything!

I wrecked one year ago yesterday on that one and broke my back in a few places, as well as my hand. I rode it yesterday (after rebuilding it over the summer), and it has never run better. Just a beautiful bike!
I've also got an '84 with fairing, etc... She's got some miles behind her!

I feel ya bro. As somebody that has a K100RS in the garage, and belongs to a family that has owned dozens of BMW bikes, I have to admit....
For the last 5 years or so, for the most part, they have been FUGLY. I really don't get the Transformer-type styling.
