So I have a question for UPS:
How come I can get a guitar shipped 3000 miles from FL to Bellingham, WA for $55, but it costs me $174 to send exactly the same package (weight/dimesnsions) from Vancouver to LA, which is less than half the distance?????
And before anyone says Customs and brokerage, their fees are ON TOP OF THAT COST!!!!!

UPS sucks, plain and simple. I don't know how they have managed to damage the packages they have (in my personal experience). I always use FedEx.

Rich,
You can always do a fee rate comparison online with each shipping service.
I always use FedEx because the shipping depot is more accessible, friendlier, and a hell of a lot cleaner than UPS! Score one for FedEx; UPS can take a hike.

Sounds like your shipping situation classifies as a "Charlie Foxtrot". I thought I'd add that in there with your "Foxtrot Oscar" comment earlier. For the record those shipping costs for the distance involved makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Cause they have to take extra security measures to make sure all the B.C. bud and Chinese Ecstacy stays in Canada. Homeland security is a biatch!! :p

Right on the money!! Spent ten minutes listening to some pillock-brained corporate gerbil blathering the company line and tap dancing, then hung up. So much for free trade and equity with our biggest trading partner........

Shipping rates are getting out of control. It wasn't to long ago that you could ship guitars all day long for $30.00
I used UPS last week to ship a Gibson Les Paul Jr from Washington State to Pennsylvania for just over $80.00. It had been awhile since I shipped a guitar. It was kind of an eye opener.

Seriously? Ground? Did you ship it yourself or have a "UPS STORE" do it? $80 seems extremely high, especially for an LP Special....smallish guitar, typical case/box.....

They charge out the pooper for insurance. When I shipped my guitars to the PTC for pickups, I added insurance for what I thought street price would be to replace them and the shipping cost went up about 60%.

Hey, right now I'm tracking a package that contains a Christmas present for a family member.
It left Southern California last Friday.
I check yesterday. It's gone to Indiana - past me, I'm in Colorado - and is now on it's way back.
"What, you mean we were supposed to scan and sort ALL of the packages in the truck?!"
Well, I hope it gets here tomorrow.

Can I suggest USPS Priority Mail for something of those dimensions? No more than $8 or $10 bucks to Alaska tops.

Yeah,I usually take small stuff there, but I had about 12 things to ship,so I thought maybe I could kill two birds with one stone.

Oh, whoopee!
Do you have any idea how much debt this is going to land this province in, how long we'll be in debt, or what a huge let-down there'll be after all the Olympic projects are finished? Meanwhile, the education, health and transportation systems are falling apart.
Never mind the infrastructure here being hugely overloaded already.....
Would you believe they're asking Vancouver residents not to use public transport during the Games so visitors can have priority? Of course, there's no way to take your car anywhere either because half the main routes are blocked off, and parking is all reserved for the Olympics. Where do we get these morons from?
F'ing Games. Just a money-making scam for a bunch of old European farts. They're about as relevant today as last year's spaghetti.....

Could be worse - have you heard? The next Commonwealth Games are going to be in New Delhi; the city fathers/powers that be are asking for an even bigger sacrifice from residents there. They've mounted a huge campaign (tv spots, billboards) begging people to Stop Urinating in the Streets, at least for the duration of the games.
Be glad all Vancouver wants you to do is stop driving your car. :p

Just went through a similar situation.
What runs the price up is:
1. Brokerage fees
2. Customs fees.
I will never ship anything via UPS to Canada again because of these ridiculous fees.
So much for NAFTA, eh?

I use USPS Priority for most everything. It's also far easier to file an ins claim and get paid with USPS too
