I have a Mesa Dual Recto Trem-O-Verb head with a 4x12 cab and I want to bring it back to school with me without having to lug around that monster 4x12. I want to use the amp basically strictly a practice amp in my apartment. Could I get away with just running that head through a 1x12 cabinet so I can not have to worry about spending extra $$$$ or carrying a 2x12 thats pretty heavy as well. Any suggestions?

You can run it through a 1x12 without problems. I think it's a great idea, instead of buying a practice amp that will never sound like your main amp anyway. Of course, with a single 12", you won't push the same amount of air, but it should sound more than good enough for practicing, and be way more portable.
You should probably check out a Mesa/Boogie Thiele 1x12", but just about anything (ie much cheaper) should be good for your application.

Yeah. Get a J-Station or a POD and a set of decent headphones. Will cost less than a 1x12 and you will be amazed at how good you will sound thru stereo.
Shame shame !
