View Full Version : Shoes On The Phone Lines?????????
So I'm channel surfing last night and come across a rap video on MTV2 or some such. Granted I'm a fat, bald old white guy from Minnesota but there were all these pairs of shoes hanging from phone lines. Whats up with that?
Apparently this means something in the rap world, right? Or is this just how they get rid of thier Keds when they outgrow them?
Well, what is it? We don't have any exposed overhead powerlines in my neighborhood so I'm going to set a pair of my old wingtips on the cable TV junction box later today and I want to make sure I know what message I'm sending. Will I be feared and respected by my peers? Will I be down and/or representing with my suburban Minnesota homies?

I believe it's a milder but agressive form of gang-lingo that the owner of the shoes could have been hurt but let go (all that was done was the de-shoe-ing). Sort of a modern day "de-pantsing". Southeast Baltimore (projects area) has a fair amount of wire dangling shoes now and then. Sad.
I've always heard (and I could be wrong) That shoes hung over a phone line meant that drugs were being sold in that particular area. Again, I could be wrong, and this is probably subject to many an urban legend.:)

Why bother or worry about it?
I'm all for free hanging of clothing on phone lines, without worrying about the message it sends out to others. The phone lines and its many uses are one little piece of freedom that I thought we had left...

First off, hold up yo. On the real,
1. If you want to be "down", you can't be sayin' stuff like 'and/or'
2. It's representin, not representing
3. There ain't no such thang as "suburban Minnesota homies"
:D
Seriously, I've been seeing this since I was a child, I really don't know if it means anything.

I don't know about in all areas, but I see them around here occasionally and have for years.
FYI - this area is old and lily-white. I thought it was just a way of messing with someone so they couldn't get their shoes back. Or a bunch of kids get drunk and think it's funny to try with their own.
