It seems that with all these new models and limited editions, there are always going to be some casualties.

The McCarty is featured in most of those limited editions. The 57/08's, Killer Quilts, Smokeburst. Still rocking as a Korina model too.

I think I still see more people here getting McCarty's than say a CU22- but of course those are old McCarty's not the McII. Has the SC245 stole some of the McCarty thunder maybe?

All in all, limiting the options on the McCarty (3 colors, no birds, no 10 tops) and adding batteries which a lot of people don't fancy probably helped doom it's popularity as an option when purchasing a new guitar.

Interesting... Three of the last 4 guitars I've bought have been McCarty's. :D

I'm speculating the reception and opinions would have been different if the McCarty II was given a different name without McCarty in it. Whenever a long term and popular model is replaced, its follow up model will be heavily compared to it and hyper focus on what was changed occurs. This is a typical and natural reaction. While requiring batteries is a turn off, the McCarty II covers a wide tonal range some of which I have not encountered with any other PRS. It was a pleasant surprise. Mine is at the PTC getting 57/08 pickups installed which I'm expecting will take it to the next level tonewise.

I see a lot of posts/articles et al using the word "requires" when it comes to the batteries... Actually, the PUPs will/still work in normal mode... It's only for activating the preamp that the batteries are used to drive... Of course, since I love the clean tones that the MVC "generates", then, yes, the word "requires" is accurate in that scenario; FWIW...

The McCarty appealed to the "classic" mindset. No extra doo-dads, etc. That's why I got mine. Adding a battery powered anything to the McCarty model just doesn't seem right to me.

I've got a couple of McCs (an 07 McTrem and a 99 McRosie) and, for some unknown reason, they're the least played of all my guitars?

The McTrem was my very first PRS, so you'd think I'd be truly attached to it. And I love the neck on the McRosie, but they just never get hauled out.

I wonder why?

Interesting post, and summation. I only have one PRS guitar and it is a standard McCarty. I love the simplicity, power and looks of the guitar and get raves from people when I play it out, not about me, but about the guitar itself and it's tone.

I was also a bit bummed to see them "improved", but knowing that I can't or won't afford another, I don't see the need to make them better than they are for the sake of it. I do love the Smokeburst model, but it's at least original in design concept, no batteries, no preamps etc. Perhaps they counted on the purists accepting a form that wasn't true to the orginal, happens with even the finiest of products from time to time.

Love my McRosie, but if I were to buy another PRS, it would probably be a SAS.
