My older son's 19th birthday is coming up (my younger son will be 18...born on the same day!) and he thinks he wants Emagic Logic for his Mac laptop. He wants to do midi with a keyboard and record his guitar digitally.

I had an earlier version of Logic for my PC and, to put it politely, I didn't like it at all. I happily use Sonar Producer but my son thinks anything I touch must be old-fashioned and suspect. :D

Anyone have any experience, opinions about the newer versions of Emagic Logic (it's either 5 or 6...he asked for 5 but I just saw a review of 6).

Thanks in advance,

-John

Hi John.

It's going to be very hard for anybody to give you a subjective view of Logic. It's like trying to describe a guitar tone... a tone to one man can be from heaven, another may dislike it.
I've personally been a Logic user for 4 or 5 years now... to me it just works, does what I asks and is easy on the eye too. However, I have friends who swear by Cubase and wouldn't touch Logic. Similarly, I have other friends who use Sonar or Digital Performer and wouldn't touch anything else either.
Your best idea would be to get to a store and let your son try everything out. It'll become pretty apparent to him pretty quick which one he prefers.

One thing about Logic 5 and 6 though.... they have a list of features the length of your legs!! Seriously, they are great programmes with a vast amount of control and options. I use Logic Platinum 6 myself, but I'd be very surprised if I use 5% of what it can do. Of course, this list of options isn't free either...
So, have a chat with your son and find out exactly what he wants to do with it.... then either get yourself into some good stores so he can grow a preference, or stick another question or two up here.

Good luck with it all!

Quinn.
