Does anybody know of a web site that explains compression A to Z, as it were?

I've got the basic idea of how to use my compressor (Focusrite Penta) but I'd really like to learn the whole philosophy of compression: when to use it, how to determine the ratios for which instruments or vocals, the whole schmeer.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

It's hard for us Audio Pros to offer advice as we tend to use our ears first and dont look at what settings we are using.

Also I can not recommend a good compressor as I am used to just tweaking whatever I have to get the best sound possible.

Heres a link that offers some basic advice but I'm afraid its just one of those black arts that need you to experience the effects of the various controls on whatever signal you are running through the particular compressor that you are using.

For example I have access to the best Neve and digital compressors that money can buy but for my Dave Gilmour shine on you crazy diamond guitar sound I have to revert to the MXR dyna comp as it just sounds right.
