Hi all!

I am wondering if there are any Godin players out here of people who have experience with these babies. The ones I have played on so far have amazed me by their versatile tone and classy looks (not overdone, basic yet nice imo). Especially the LGX has my special attention, as the piezo works very well.

I am considering buying a secondhand LGX of someone, it's the older type with the stacked humbuckers (I believe it's from 1998 or 1999). As I know the seller he won't abuse me on the financial end (he's getting a custom guitar built at this moment).

What do you guys think of Godin and this guitar in special?

Seems you and I have a couple of things in common, Anders, I also have an Ibanez (I think that's one in your avatar).

I bought my first Godin LGX in 1997, loved it, but traded it for a Parker Fly because I wanted a piezo/trem. Stupid mistake, it was a really nice guitar and had a killer Chevron top to it.

I have since gone thru a few from ebay, they just weren't quite "right", they weren't the players as I remember the first one. Now, I actually have another one on the way, it has the Seymour Duncans (which I've never had) and the price is right, I could easily make $50-$100 on it if I decide to sell it.

I think they are very good guitars, especially at their price point. They have everything I personally want in a guitar: Very thick, meaty, Les Paul-like bottom end, nice control layout, unobtrusive, thin neck profile, coil tap options/5-way switch, and stay in tune fairly well. The tetrad pickups sound pretty good to me, I'm curious to hear how the Duncans in this one sound compared to my previous ones. From what I read online, the Duncans sound much better.

The piezo is one of the best systems I've heard to date. It's an L.R. Baggs, and has an acoustic-style 3-way bass/mid/treble slider preamp, and separate volume control. The LGX is a solid resonant guitar, and I think that personality comes thru with the piezos activated. As if that weren't enough, there's also a blend knob for when using magnetic and piezo, to achieve a desired balance.

This guitar is definitely on par with a CE (comparing to a bolt on) and comes with nicer tops (if you're into that) but costs less.

A2. I have the LGX-SA with the factory-installed Duncan Custom Custom Custom and Jazz PUP pair. Very, very nice axe and tone, but two caveats if you're thinking of buying one: (1) the Duncans sound much better to most people than the Godin PUPs on the axe in the pic in your post; (2) about two years ago, Godin redid the necks, making them alot thicker and more comfortable. As soon as I tried one, I ordered a replacement for my older LGX-SA from the factory and I'm very glad I did, the new neck is absolutely perfect, plays and feels like diamonds! I guess what I'm saying is, unless I got a price I couldn't refuse on the guitar in your pic, I would pass on it and cop a new(er) one.

Thanks for the reactions guys :)

I am not really looking for a new guitar or anything (I am moving in a few months, and I have got to get a new car...), it's just that a guy I know is selling this Godin. I will probably get a (real) pretty price on it, but I wouldn't mind waiting if you guys say the newer ones are better.

It'll probably be a few months before he will actually sell (his custom is taking some time). The top on this specific guitar is ultracool, it has graining in two way's (ok I'm having GAS a bit ;) ):

PS: The guitar in my avatar is indeed an Ibanez (RG2027x): it's a solid mahogany 7-string with a LR Baggs piezo in the lo-pro edge floyd. I'm a collector of nice Ibanezes (my collection can be found on my website!), but lately I'm more into other brands...

If you look at the pic of mine, you'll see the same two-way grain, but let me caution you on this. Sure, it's "pretty," but you don't play grain. Guitars are like women in this regard: external beauty catches your eye, what's inside your heart. What I'm trying to say is, with due respect, buying a guitar that has two outdated features that seriously matter to tone and playability because "it looks pretty" is, IMO, shortsighted.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to try one of the newer ones with the Duncans and the beefed-up neck and decide for yourself.

OK, I'm off my soapbox. If you want it, here it is, come and get it. ;)

It will be May before the guy is going to sell it, and the guitarstore around the corner from where I live is a Godin dealer :) . I'll try a new LGX for sure in the coming weeks orso!

I know it's kinda silly to buy guitars on the looks, but then again I'm not really a tone-nut anyway...I have already found the tone I am looking for, and most guitars I have are mainly eyecandy :p That doesn''t mean that I don't play them or hate the sound of them, if they would have sounded less I probably would have bought them anyway....It might not be the smartest thing to do, but if everybody would think rationally the guitarsector will be dead within a few years. You can only play one guitar at a time, why have more ;)
