Finally broke down and bought a Telecaster last night on Ebay. Local guy so I can go pick it up and save shipping, which is nice!

Here she be: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3706076636&category=38083&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWN%3AIT&rd=1

Anyone have any experience with these pups? DiMarzio Fast Track T in the bridge and Twang King in the neck? One of the reasons I bought this one was because of the pups, and what I read about them.

I may change that pickguard from black back to white though. :)

Peace,
Aldwyn

Telecasters are great. Probably the most versatile guitar ever made. Not really sure why, but they seem to be able to do anything.

Congrats!

Nice score! White pearloid p/g would look killer on it!

The DiMarzio should be pretty decent. If not, a nice set of Rio Grande aint to expensive, and sound killer. In fact I may have a extra Rio Grande tele bridge pup. if you don't like the D's, might want to try it.

I dig the DiMarzio Twang King in the neck. Way cool little pup. Heavy on the mid range, but with a decent amount of briteness to bring out a twang when I want it. This one is staying right where it is!

The Fast Track T in the bridge position, though... Not a big fan. It doesn't take much to break up the note in the lower end. Even lowering the pup as low as I can get it (which isn't very low since it's a hum in a single coil package, requiring more depth), I am still breaking up in the lower end. If the low end sounded as nice as the mid range, I'd keep it... but it's also loosing some of the sparkly, crystal highs that I expect from a Tele. This pup makes it sound more like a Tele Custom then a standard Tele.

I think I am going to try the stock pup to see what I think there. Might want to try your Rio Grand Big Mike, as well. What's it sound like?

I may just buy a Twang King bridge, too, and see how that'll do me.

But the Fast Track T is destened for Ebay.

Reguardless, this guitar plays sweetly. The neck is almost perfect (a few twists of the truss rod should do the trick) with a nice profile. The maple fretboard is smooth, and the frets are a nice size. I am looking forward to playing this thing more. :)

Hi Aldwyn,

The Rio I'm not using at the moment is their Muy Grande model. Nice pickup, vintage voicing, but overwound. Check out their website for more info. www.riograndepickups.com I use their vintage tallboys in mine, and I love em. I bought the muy incase I didn't have enough beef with the tallboy. I had it in the bridge of a 52RI i had for awhile, but that guit never floated my boat as much as I thought it would Back to stock and sold, hense the extra pup.

Yes, but couldn't we say that about ANY guitar purchase? :) Ok, maybe not a Peavey or an Estovan Home Shopping Network Special, but... ;)

And yes, the price was one of the reasons why I went for it, especially with the added pups and case (though it's beat to hell... buying a new one). I hate to say this, but for the first time ever, I used a sniping service to make sure I got it, and got it low. I feel guilty, because I hate when people snipe me, but... a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do!

Well, good news for me!! :)

I started to pop out the bridge pup to swap it with the origional one, and discovered it was hung on something in the routing! So I cleared the way, and volla! I had more more movement space for the Fast Track!

So I started to play with hight... what a difference! NOW she sounds like a Tele should shound! Nice crystal highs, twangy mid, and shallow lows. The Fast Track stays in the bridge position for now. I want to play with adjustments some more, but there is hope for this pup now. Going to try and find a place where it gets more growley without breaking up. :)

Aldwyn

Here's my new Telecaster. I opted for one of the nicer newer Fender cases with the dark blue interior...can't stand those plastic ones.

I'm going to put a humbucker in the neck position. I'm thinking about a Duncan Antiquity or a Seth Lover. Any thoughts between these two pickups?

Nice catch at a super price ... I still consider you a traitor for selling your HBII, but you got a tele so that counts for something. :)

How does it compare to your Variax now? (or did you sell that one?)

Thanks, Jo! I am enjoying playing her.

Re: The HB II, I understand the new owner is having the same issue I am: Haivng a hard time getting used to the wound 3rd. He wants to sell it now and buy a CU22. So you should be seeing it back up here for sale eventually! Shame, too... such a beautiful looking, and sounding guitar.

And yes, I still have my Variax, you meanie! :) Though I can be bit fickle (as you put it once!) with my guitars. hehe! The Variax seems to be briter... more on the high end. The Tele, though, has swapped out pups, and the bridge pup is a blade humbucking model, so it's got more of a fullness to it then your standard pups.

But it FEELS like a Tele, which is nice. The Variax didn't feel like it all all, especially with the cheap neck on it.

I think I will always have a Variax, though. It's to usefull in recording! Besides, it's fun to play the sitar and banjo! :)

Fender makes '51 vintage reissues .... if they are the same ones on the '51 Nocaster they are awesome. Not quite as harsh/bright sounding as those foud on the '52 Vintage reissue

Aaaah I like the cleverly angled shot, cos we know if you took a full frontal of it, you'd end up with something like this reflected

Thanks, Guys! If we have a jam while the UK Forumites are in town, perhaps I will bring the Tele too.

And Jo.... really, after all... I am a naturist, so you never know when I'll be nekked!

Of course that is why I bought the chrome pickguard... I needed much more chrome to display my fun bits! :D

This Tele is the first electric guitar I ever owned - I bought it brand new in '69 for $187. It's pretty beat up, but I can remember every nick and dent it got in 35 years of playing. Even though I have eight guitars now, I still play this as often as any other - it's a guitar with real character. I put a tapped SD '59 in the neck position, but after trying a bunch of replacement pups in the bridge I always went back to the original - it's a kinda rude but it cuts through everything.

I've missed this thread until now too.

But I'm not kidding when I say that I woke up this morning and thought to myself "wouldn't it be good if I got a Telecaster"

As true as I'm sat here.

Now all I'm seeing is Tele's.

And yours Aldwyn is the best looking one I've checked out today.

Any thoughts on Mexican over US ones or vise versa?

Thanks!

As far as MIM vs USA, I actually prefer the MIM models. I like the neck profile better... it's smaller and more like what I am used to. The USA models, uncluding the Highway 1, all seem to have HUGE necks with a WIIIDE fretboard. While the MIM is larger in all dimensions then my PRS w/t, it's still comfy and easily playable.

Elecgtronics wise, the pups being replaced in my MIM makes it hard for me to tell you the difference in sound.

Fit and finish wise, the is somethig more solid about a USA built... but to me the MIM are lighter, and therefore, easier to play.

Aldwyn
