Everything of course hinges on condition and originality. Here's a '68 for $8,500:

You could also try Elderly or Southworth Guitars.
I can't give you much more advice, but I can tell you that the folks at Hoboken Vintage are knowledgeable and straight dealers; I bought a guitar from them last summer and the deal was easy & quickly completed.

Or I'll build you one to your own specs if you want!!!!!:D
Those old ones are a liability if you are taking them out the house.
Also have you considered a 1980's Squire JV Strat, mine is as good if not better than any Fender I've played and you can pick them up for around £500.

I agree with Gary, the old ones are too valuable to take out of the house, perhaps they should even be in a bank vault.
Why not try a Custom Shop relic? My 56 Strat relic looks, and feels old and probably sounds extremely close to an original, but is not as expensive.

Having said that, I would love to get my hands on an early 60's, pre CBS original (at the right price of course), having stupidly sold one in 1980.

I too am considering a Custom Shop Closet Classic or Relic. I believe I will get a nice guitar at a fraction of the cost.

why not seek out a refin, I had a 66 refin that I sold about 2 years ago for 2600. They can be had for cheaper than one would imagine. There is a 66 custom color in hollywood for 6 grand and some change(a great price for a custom color).Ive played a lot of relics as well and to me they cant capture the magic the originals have. That being said not every original is magical.

Could be well worth trying out one of Gary's new builds and let us know what it's like :D
And as for Gary's Squire it does indeed play and sound great, I remember Francis Dunnery from It Bites always preffered them to Fenders own ;)

I misread the topic title and thought you wanted an "original" strat as in out of the ordinary custom shop :D Sorry, my wrong...
The question here is: will you play the sucker or will you cherish it?

I know what you mean mate.
I've got serious GAS for a Tom Anderson droptop Classic at the moment but I really need to sell the Santana II for cash towards the car I've just bought.
I may sell my McCarty Archtop too and go for an Anderson
You know if I was gigging again I could justify it, but for sitting noodling in the house ??? I'm not sure anymore :(

A Jeep Cherokee 3.7 V6 Limited :D
Had to pack in the fast cars, too many speeding fines  plus with the new job I'm now driving through Northumberland and the back roads are prone to flooding and snow drifts. With the weather we've been having the last couple of months I just wouldn't have been able to get to work ......... hold on  ........ maybe I do need a sports car again :D
How's the FTO Kev ???

Regarding prices of old instruments I don't thnk you see many Strads down the local pub.
A friend of mine has a 1960's dot 335 which has been his main blues guitar since the 70's. It's just not worth the risk taking it out to gigs in and around the North eastern area as you can't keep an eye on it all the time.
We did a gig ages ago in scotswood road and a guy came up and said nice guitar as a compliment. we turned our back and he was legging it out of the door with it.
Fortunately the landlord clocked him and smacked him over the back of the legs with a baseball bat that he had lying around behind the bar.
Can't remember the name of the pub but it was a big one at the ed of scotswood road where the blaydon bridge is.
I'm sure Ainsley will remember the name of the pub.

Thats the one! and we had to hide in the kitchens the next time we played as there was a huge fight going on after the gig, between the women!!!!!
Its also featured in the Blaydon Races now I come to think of it.
well remembered Ainsley.

Can you remember The Hydraulic Crane ?
That was rough too and they had topless barmaids, not that you'd look as they were as rough as a badgers arse and very very hefty, and this was in the early eighties  I remember as a kid you could see into the pub if you were sat on the top deck of a double decker bus going along Scotswood Road :D

Yes I do remember it, it became a restaurant in it's last years but I did have the good fortune of doing a pub crawl along scotswood road in the 1980's with some old colleagues from Tyne Tees.

yeah, i'm sooo craving a pre-CBS strat (pre '65) but they're really really expensive. i have on order a '60's relic, and i absolutely adore my NOS nocaster from the fender custom shop, so i'm looking forewards to the strat!
