Well, while you're in Washington, DC, you can't go wrong by visiting the Smithsonian's Natural History and Air & Space museums; they happen to be the two most frequently visited museums in the world, and for good reason. As an added bonus, they, like all of the Smithsonian museums, are free. I also hear great things about the International Spy Museum (not free), although I have not been there myself.
If you find that you're having too much fun, you can go to the Holocaust Museum; it'll bring you down, but it is a magnificent museum, and last time I was there, it was free.
Annapolis is also worth a stop while you're on the road to Stevensville. It's a beautiful city (it has the largest collection of 18th century buildings in America) and it's a great place to eat, if you like seafood.

Good call on Cedar Point! (It is heaven for anyone who loves coasters, best park in the world bar none.)
It sounds like you are canvasing a lot of territory. Since you are covering so much ground, and each area has different culture, I would recommend food. It doesn't take a lot of time, but it will give almost as much flavor as the geography...(No pun intended on the "flavor")
San Francisco - Seafood, and Sour Dough Bread
Chicago - Either pizza, or Italian Beef Sandwiches
Between Pittsburgh and New York, you should make a detour to Philly and get a Cheesesteak

Like a crab cake or crab cake sandwhich in Maryland?
Don't even bother eating one anywhere else.
Peace,
Aldwyn
