I just refinished a strat. MY desire was to get the whitest white I could find to go along with gold hardware. I had the guy put three or four coats of super glossy auto clear on top. The guitar is beautiful. The question is...do you think that by putting three coats of clear that it negatively effected the tone? My ears aren't what they used to be but I can't seem to hear any difference. What do you think?

If YOU can't tell a difference, that's all that matters. Seriously - can't be any worse than what Fender is coating their guitars with these days, and I own and love 4 modern Fenders.

3 or 4 coats shouldn't be that thick...I would see it as a non-issue. Just out of curiosity, how many coats does PRS put on their guitars?

That's really not much... especially if it was Nitro. Nitro goes on very thin. :)

Even two or three coats of poly shouldn't be too bad. Just remember to keep straps and other dye colored materials away from that brite white finish. Don't want any pigment transfers after all.
