Over the past year of buying and trying and selling condenser vocal mics, I have a handful of keepers. 2 Groove Tubes mics that are really really good, one Studio Projects that I like, an MXL (believe it or not) that I like and the 'winner'...ta da!
The Shure KSM27.
Off eBay brand new w/shipping $239 (and the guy can get them all day long at that price).
All my mics are $400 and below (we all want a Neuman or SounDeluxe someday don't we?).
The Shure KSM27 is the same diaphram as the KSM44 multi pattern which is about $700 or so. If you want a full, smooth, round sounding mic for vocals then look no farther. It does everything else great too.
But to get that 'pixie dust' vocal magic happening that you have to bump into way more expensive mics (a good preamp helps also of course) to get it's here in a $239 AMERICAN made product.
And gimme a break, in my line of work our best dynamic wireless vocal mics are Sennheisers and I love 'em but Shure has my respect as they have the SM 58's/Beta's and they know their stuff.
Check it out...
