I know that we all are attracted to PRS guitars by their amazing appearance. For many, that is their primary motivator to purchase in the first place. I am as attracted to the appearance as the next guy, but for me a guitar has to sound great and play well for me to bond with it. I recently purchased a used "plain Jane" PRS singlecut from Dave's Guitar Shop, and this guitar has just amazed me. I'm not quite sure what attracted me to this particular instrument, other than I was looking for a reasonably priced used singlecut in this particular color (tobacco sunburst). I bought the guitar sight unseen via the internet, it is a non-10 top with moons, and has an adjustable bridge/stoptail in place of the usual bridge/stoptail. I got this thing for a great price, and when it arrived I was really amazed in that the instrument was basically brand new - it looked like it had never been played. I strummed it a few times unplugged, and I knew I had a special instrument - the resonance and sustain was incredible. When I plugged it in, it just blew me away. This is the best sounding, best sustaining singlecut I have ever played by far. I'm loving this thing! I can't believe that anyone in their right mind would have sold this thing, although I do know that tone is a very subjective thing. I know that the average PRS is a great guitar, but I've played a few that I didn't care for at all, including some real lookers. This has been a great deal for me, and the price I paid for it was just icing on the cake. Has anyone else ever had an experience like this with a PRS - have you ever found a guitar that sounded so good you couldn't believe it, especially a plain jane without the nice bird inlays or the beautiful top? Ever had the opposite experience - bought a real looker only to be thoroughly disappointed with the way it sounded?
Thanks,
Tom

To me singlecuts are just great looking guitars, no matter the color, flame, or what they are just my favorite guitar overall other guitars!

Although it is not a PRS, the music store I frequent just got a new Les Paul Classic in Lightburst - it is a 'plain jane' maple top, but the thing just speaks to me... I love how it feels and looks in my hands.

Hey there is nothing wrong with non-PRS singlecuts. McInturff makes a killer sc and a few other come to mind, Hamer, McNaught, etc. I just love singlecuts period.
What? No photo? Must be camera shy! ;)

My first PRS, a McCarty Standard, was Vintage Cherry over plain mahogany but it was a great guitar. I traded it for my second (and current) PRS, a regular McCarty in Teal Black. The top is nice but no 10 top, and of course it doesn't have birds, but it is an exceptional guitar.
Before I bought my latest McCarty I tried quite a few beautiful PRS Guitars, including a few with Indian Rosewood necks, but none of them grabbed me. Don't get me wrong - they were very good guitars, but when I grabbed my rather basic McCarty it immediately stood out as a keeper!

Only 1 of my 4 PRSi has a flame top, and that isn't even a 10. But they all sound fantastic.
Tone first...period. I have a black singlecut that just kills.

Yep, I had a plain McSoap, and it was fantastic. I still wish I had it. Tone and playability are so much more important than looks.

Yep. Sent it right back.

I just bought a plain black singlecut that I've been raving about. There was a big president's day sale at my local G.C. I'd heard that they had 3 prs that were going cheap. I got there a tad late, but not too late to pick up the last one. I saw one of the others- sunburst, birds, etc.-real pretty.
I know I would've walked right past the black one for the "prettier" ones, and I bet it wouldn't play as shweet as the one I ended up with, so for me it couldn't have worked out better.
I've pulled some nice ones off the shelf and held them for 5 seconds and knew--Nope, not for me--but I always bypass the plain ones. No more!!
