It gets worse. I'm in the running for a huge gig in Myrtle Beach.....you east coasters will probably know who I'm talking about. When I say in the running, there doesn't seem to be any competition, I pretty much have the gig, I just gotta get all 90 tunes down (if anyone knows the solo for Jump, I'm all ears)...anyway, the gig requires dropping my guitars 1/2 step. Now, I have done this with the PRS and found it actually stayed in tune and I didn't have to tweak the trem(but I'm gonna, as they are supposed to be parralel to the body for proper performance, right?)...but I gotta drop my Valley Arts, also. Which has a Kahler Steeler(Floyd style thingy)...I was almost thinking about using my Pitch Shifter, which has a function to make the guitar sound like 1/2 step down, but that's cheating, isn't it? Problem is, my VA is set up killer. JUST FREAKIN KILLER....I almost would rather take it somewhere and have it done, rather than taking the chance and doing it myself(I've had a ton of experience with a floyd, so I'm familiar with the process)...when dropping 1/2 step, since this is going to be a permanent move for awhile, did you guys have to go up a string gauge to deal with the loss of tension? Which would put me at 11's....suggestions? Advice? Quit the gig? Also, this is a gig where I gotta "cop it like the record"..which I'm not fond of, as I've always pretty much been a studio cat and a first call player, people have trusted me(fools) to do my job to the best of my ability....any advice on this? As stated earlier, anyone who knows the Jump solo, it seems to be kicking my country butt....

I ususally go up a guage in strings to compensate for the decrease string tension. You'll still need to fiddle with the trem claw to get the trem sitting level with the body but the guitar will still feel the way it was when it was tuned to concert pitch
hope this helps

the only thing that scares me about going up to 11's is the last time I did, I lost a bit of speed, and got this really weird pain in my shoulder (my right shoulder for my picking hand)...maybe it was because I was trying to chicken pick, or something...I always properly stretch before I play, I'm just wondering if 11's are too heavy for my playing style...I do alot of compound bends, and alot of Lukather (surprise surprise) sounding stuff...Still calling for that Jump solo....

Just out of curiosity, Im an "east coaster" and i live in Myrtle Beach and im not sure what your referring too.. A friend of mie owns a club...he had a career in the 80's...his guitarist is a friend of mine, and just gave notice. Since you live in Myrtle, until this is a done deal, I'd rather not drop names yet. It's not hard to figure out with the clues, though.

A huge gig?, 90 songs? If thats a gig that you'd have to play 6 nights a week, almost all year i think I know what it is. Are you gonna sit back, relax in a rocking chair moving at the speed of life?

when I go down a half step, I keep the same strings and rejoice in the lower string tension.

Ya, i was. I am but im a transplant from the north, been here about 5 years and i dont know to many other musicians from here..Brodie...email me...let's see, I was with Sawgrass down there...Sideways Derby, Velcro Mullet, Charlie Floyd, Charlie Brewer...Tim Clark...actually, I almost wish it was the Opry gig....I can grab the Brent Mason chicken pickin' stuff like nothin'....which brings me to another point...it's weird...I can listen to this tele blazin' chicken pickin stuff at 100 mph, and grab it no problem...one little medium tempo Eddie solo is kickin my butt...as far as the lighter string tension, man, I am so weird when it comes to that.....before taking the leap to 10's, I used 9's forever....then on my first bender tele, the .11 (b string) kept snapping, so I went up a half guage to 9.5's...still kept poppin, until I went to 10's. Now, even 9.5's feel light, but I do so much hybrid picking that my left hand doesn't really care about string guage, it's my right hand...I should be some therapists dream case...
