Our producer's mom does some really killer custom airbrush work. She does guitars, motorcycles, etc. Shoot me an email and I'll forward you her contact information.

I know a guy here in Australia who does brilliant work. He is usually willing to takle any graphic. However, his prices reflect his work (but rightly so). For a PRS, I would only ever have graphic work done on a solid mahogany. Don't think I could do anything to a nice maple top, it would seem like butchery, hehe.

Hope you can find a great artist to do what you are looking for. They are out there, but they seem to hide away.....

Oh yeah! I will have one black with blue, and one white with blue I think...unless there are any other colors you know of that I should see. I've got a couple photos of some metal CEs, but nothing else. Was there one that did a blue to purple to blue fade?

Was there one that did a blue to purple to blue fade? The original cover guitar of the 1985 PRS catalog was a black Metal with red/orange stripes. Rick Hogue, in one of his early Modern Investor columns, noted that the rarest Metals had base colors of Magenta Pearl and Seafoam Green.

This belonged to Bud Davis, the guy who painted the Metals (as well as most pre-1985 guitars) for PRS, his personal one-off:

WHERE are all of the metals by the way???

Are they all in collectors hands??

I need my white one!!

But I will "settle" for a black w/ blue stripes.

WHERE are all of the metals by the way???

Are they all in collectors hands??Absolutely - it's one of the most collectible PRSi and there weren't many made because PRS couldn't give them away at the time. If you are serious, and have the cash, talk to Rick Hogue at Garrett Park.

oh man is that awesome!!

I'm serious, but I dont have the cash:( If a regular "common" old 80s model goes for 5-6000, what does a metal go for, 10-12? I could conceivably swing 6-7 sometime in my lifetime, but any higher than that, and I'll need to be a rock star or settle for repros.

hey lance, I just checked out your music, and I dig it!

On the growlier parts, it almost reminds me of a happier version of Gryps first record, if you've ever heard them.

thats freakin brilliant Mak! I thought Id seen someone had done this already.

Original Metals didnt have Birds, did they? I cant find any with them, but really, I think I like it better with Birds.

One idea I've been toying around with, is moving a tone control to where the 5 way would be, and doing a sort of "stealth 3 way" where the sweet switch is. It'd look pretty close to "stock", and be a bit different at the same time.
Might take some getting used to though.

Did you do the painting yourself? If not, who did you use?

Did you do the painting yourself? If not, who did you use?The whole thing came about as a another hardcore Metal fan struggled to a) Afford a real one and b) couldnt find one to buy anyway!

So I bought a beater - a Cu22 in a poorly faded raspberry finish and sent it off to SimsCustom here in the UK with the instructions to make me a PRS Metal. If you go one the SimsCustom website you can see the process they went through to make it - check out the guitar of the month section - It's in there somewhere). Martin Sims is arguably the most talented refinisher / guitar graphical artist in the UK. He is responsable for all manner of well known artists guitars and pratically has a worldwide monopoly on fretboard LED installations. The donor guitar had a crappy SD pickup shoved in the bridge position so I replaced that with an HFS and, at the same time, removed the tone control and treplaced it with a sweet switch. Knobs and other electrics were replaced to 1985/6 specs - only the pickups differ from that baseline now.

The back of the donor was already black so Martin left this alone so that the original serial number remains visible. Whilst not a perfect remedy, I wanted this so that the guitar cannot be passed of as an original Metal sometime in the future. The whole refin plus parts cost about $1200 at todays rate. The guitar was cheap because it was a bit beaten up so all in all, it adds up to a realistically priced Metal that rawks real well and always turns heads.

I wouldnt hesitate in a heartbeat to do this again... a very rewarding way to revitalise an abused guitar.
