Can anyone recommend a decent vocal mic that's not going to kill me? I've been using a Beta 58 in my studio to cut vocals, but I'm pretty sure I'm ready to move up into a large condenser...but am having to be budget conscience...

I have been very happy with my AT4040... excellent mic, which I think beats everything else in it's price class.

I have found the Shure Beta 87A to be a superb condenser mic- and I'm NOT a Shure fan when it comes to live vocals.
YMMV.

Studio Projects C3.
It was my first "good" large-cond. mic and I still use it to this day for a lot of things, including vocals. You could also check out the C1, but I went with the C3 because it can do cardioid, figure 8, and omni - I wanted the flexibility of the multi patterns. Nowadays I have other mics in my closet, so I mostly use the C3 for its figure 8 and omni uses.
Solid mic, good price, and excellent sound. It also works well without a fancy preamp - most of the time I have my C3 jacked straight into my Digi001.

Dak,
Before you think large condenser, sample an Audix OM-2. Dynamic with better sound IMHO than a Shure, not as harsh and more balanced with better bass response. Works well in live apps. And you don't have to put out a lot of cash: $99.
