Ok what am I missing here.
I picked up a set of Fender CS '69 pickups. I tried to install them this evening.
I can't get the screws that hold them onto the pickguard to fit in the pickups. The screws that were in with the old pickup set does not fit either.
The screw holes were filled with wax and I think I got that cleaned.
What they heck? Is there some kind off trick?

Nah, sometimes you have to take a drill bit and open the holes up a bit. I've seen this with Fender p/u's off and on over the years.

Um, you probably will not like to hear this, but I am putting them in my '56 Relic strat ... as I think the stock '56 CS pickups are too thin for my liking ....

Wouldn't bother me none! Gotsa make the tone you like. I'm pretty blown away by some of the latest fender offerings. My parts strat has fat 50's. (thanks donnie) I'm digging those, and when i can I wanna nab one of those new 60's classic player strats with the 69's in it. Or the 50's with the new vintage pups. can't decide. Both sound great.

Must be a common problem, I had to enlarge the holes in my CS '69s also. I've got them in a classic 50's MIM strat and really like them. Love the big, fat glossy maple neck on this strat too. Say what you will about MIM strats, but I like playing this one and I don't have to sweat any abuse it suffers.

Ok good deal. I used a flat head jewler's screw driver and reemed (sp?) out the holes a bit. I didn't realize the material was so soft ... and I thought their were threads in there. Wrong.
Well, the '69's are in and the strat sounds great. Much thicker sounding. The only beaf I have is the bridge pickup is much "sharper" than I thought. More tele like than I thought it would be like. The middle pickup is a real surprise ... very nice sounding. I think with a little adjusting of the hight I can get the bridge pickup a little less bright.
Oh and TomMc, I once owned a 50's MIM Esquire ... light weight ash body and a lightening fast maple neck. I lived it. But I traded it in towards a '52 tele reissue and I am happy with the '52 RI. I almost bought a MIM '60's Classic series tele, but the quality just didn't stack up to the 50's classic series Esquire. Neck was crap, pickups lacked gain, and the chrome seemed cheesey. If you find a good MIM, buy it as they can make good ones.
I also picked up a 1985 MIJ Tele Custom RI in sunburst. And it is a real relic ... major checking and wear. Its great. I have a set of '51 nocaster pickups on order for it, and a new nut on order. I'll have to get some photos uploaded.

man do I love my MIM 50's esquire. I put a fralin in it and changed some caps around, but that axe is MONEY. I love it.
I'm going to get some sort of strat soon. I just put together a partscaster, but I think i actually prefer some of the MIM strats!

Amp belongs to my bassplayer but I had it completely gone through and put a new speaker in it. (orig. long gone) still need to break it in. Very cool tweed tone. If it was mine, I'd probably switch it to 2x10s. (it's a 15")
