I've been keeping my eye out for a good deal on a CE 24, thinking maybe I could just have USAGC or Warmoth make me a wide-fat carved neck to go on it. I may have found one, but it turns out no one makes replacement compatible necks. Bummer.

Any ideas? Or am I just SOL here.

I'm sure someone out there will make a neck that will fit the guitar. You just have to find him or her. It won't be one of the big shops like USACG or Warmoth, you'll have to find a small luthier, mom and pop shop type who could do it.

This guy is local to me, he builds custom guitars for people. Two of my friends have guitars made by him, beautiful instruments. He might be able to make something that would fit. Just checked his site, if you look at the Electric page, two of the guys at the bottom, Ben and Donald, are the guys I'm referring to.

I would say try getting a CE24 with a regular neck. It's very close to wide-fat. Otherwise, you can put a SAS neck on it but loose 2 frets in the process. Another option would be trying a Johnny Hilland model and see if you like the neck on that.

Really? the regular neck is close to the wide fat?! THAT is good news! Man, Ive been wanting a sweet older PRS I'll actually be able to play, but I'd heard the regular was similar to the wide thin. This thread has considerably broadened my GAS horizons:)

Look at the specs here:

Note, 1980s PRS necks vary significantly. I have an 'ibanez' '89 wide-thin and a 'baseballbat' '87 regular.

For me the regular carve is better than the Wide Fat.

you could try Doug at Soulmate guitars for a new neck with paddle headstock and maybe have a local luthier finish it off to PRS specs

Doug's rep is excellant

Jeff Miller ( the variax conversion guy ) uses them on most of his guitars

I knew instantly what you were talking about when you mentioned the variax conversion. I'm sold! I thought for sure that guy made his own necks. SWEET!

I wonder if he'll make some bodies for me too...
