does anyone here have this problem? My D string does'nt last a week, i'm using 10's right now, i gig on week-ends, i use the trem most of the time, i wipe the strings and the guitar after each use.. it breaks right on top of the saddle, on the spot where the string makes an angle...and this had been going on for 2 months now..

it sounds like the saddle.. one little trick i do is lubricate it with a graphite pencil, just run the tip over it a few times and it should make the string run over the saddle easier, other than that all i can recommend is changing the saddle itself, how old is the guitar?

thanks! Ill try that as soon as I get home and The guitar is about a year old right now.. I did check the saddles and it looks fine, I did not feel any rough spots along the path of the string..what kind of saddles would you recommend if i decide to change them? I heard about Graph Tech, are they any good?http://forums.birdsandmoons.com/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif

Graphtech are probably the first people i'd ever recommend to anyone!

I used to break bs and ds - changed to the Mann saddles - haven't broken a string since.

Must be a rough edge... It can be worse if you rest your hand on top of the bridge from time to time... if the graphite does not work, look closely at the bridge for an edge that needs to be smoothed..
good luck!

while on subject of strings, does anyone else here use the PRS strings? i have been using d'addaro for 11 years, but since getting my PRS i thought i might as well keep using their strings, and i was astonished at their life span, they stay feeling bright and new for far longer than any other strings that i've used!

I use the PRS strings...I actually use the 9.5's....Daddario made them, and when I saw the PRS strings, and the 9.5's, I thanked Jesus. I like the PRS strings, and I think D'Addario makes them to PRS specs...may wanna check me on that fact

D'Addario makes them, but they are different than off-the-shelf D'Addario. PRS strings are pure nickel.

If you don't want to file the saddle you could take the D string and rub it back and fourth several times and that may smooth things out. You probably have a burr in there and that should remove it.

I can highly recommend Graphtech...Blue has a set on her, and I have not broke a string...yet. I also used them on several b bender teles, as the second string used to snap like a bad bra strap

**Old Thread Resurrection Alert!**
:D
Anyway, I am experiencing this on my Std22. I use GHS Boomer 10's on all my guitars and the trem is blocked on the 22. I don't remember having this issue on my Custom. I don't see or feel any burrs and I hate the sound of Graphtech saddles. Anybody have a suggestion for replacement saddles? I have heard Mann Made but they don't list parts on the website. Do they still sell them? Price? Anything else out there?
Thanks -Frank
Try this.
Remove the string/broken string. Take a Q tip and swab back and forth in the groove where the string sets. If cotton is snagged by this motion, you have a burr, a lot of the times you can't even see them.
Once you see the burr take a small piece of 320 or 400 sandpaper folded in half and gently work it back and forth in the slot. Repeat Q-tip until the snag no logger occurs.
Even if you can't feel or see a burr, dressing the saddle should help.
Good luck!

Never had breakage in that area, has to be the saddle. Been using D'addarios 20 years no issues. Good luck w the fix.

I had the same issue with my CU22 back in 2007 with the D string. At the time I was gigging and touring a lot so it was unacceptable. The Q tip thing didn't snag, and there seemed to be no reason for it. I switched to the Graph Techs and while the slight tonal change wasn't welcome, it was better than breaking strings on stage. After my daughter was born and I stopped gigging so much, I switched back to the stock saddles. I don't know if the D saddle is in a different spot or what but I haven't broken a string since.

I dunno...I've been breaking D strings for decades. Doesn't matter which guitar I play - the D always breaks first.

That's 'cause the core in the D is actually thinner than your top E string - sad fact of life!

If all else fails here maybe try some big bends nutsauce?

Nutsauce is for the nut... I'm not sure I'd want to put it all over my saddles.
My Tremonti is always breaking d-strings down at the saddle... seems to be a common issue.

I spoke to the owner who makes big bends and he recommended to me to put a little on the bridge saddle as well as the nut. I don't have the string break issue but I'd give it a go if I was snapping strings

Interesting... I will definitely try it.

Great thread - I'm having a similar problem on my Custom 24 trem - it's breaking at the saddle; and the string appeared to be buckling just between the bottom of the saddle and the eylet where the string comes in and up on to the saddle itself. My tech slightly filed the EAD saddles and it did NOT fix the problem. I'm thinking it could be A) the eyelets are sharp around the edges and are not letting the string line up properly onto the saddle or B) the saddles are not aligned properly, thus forcing the string to want to buckle and try to go in two directions. Anyone have this similar issue? Thanks in advance.
I've been reading that the Mann saddles are the way to go - will this void my warrantee.
Thanks
