View Full Version : McCarty Rosewood Creaking Strings

I've had my McCarty with a Rosewood neck for a few weeks now and I've noticed on the G / B strings, that any bends over a 1/4 cause this creaking sound right at the nut. It doesn't show up at the pick-ups, but when playing at low volume I can hear it...
Any suggestions on what might be causing this, and what I might do to fix it?
Much Appreciated,
Canuckle

Did you change the string gauge? Sounds like the string slot in the nut is a little narrow. If so, you simply need to widen the slot. If not, I don't know.:o

Sounds like a slightly tight nut slot. Either rub a pencil in the slot between string changes or have somebody file the slot out a little.

Or add some big bends Nut Sauce. That stuff works great.

The guitar is defective. You should put it up for sale in the emporium for $50. :D Why is that never funny when I say it?!
Yeah it's your nut. I don't know why PRS insists on lcutting the nuts for 9s. It wouldn't hurt to cut them for 10s, because 9s would still fit. It's a pain in the ass I tell ya.

I've been able to fit .11's in my nut just fine. You should be able to get '10s into them stock fine just as well. PRS nuts are the best!! -The best Jerry, the best!!- Sorry I had to.
Anyone know wheres thats from? ;)

I could be a rough slot...Take a piece of 400 grit sandpaper, fold it in half, and smooth out the slot. Just be careful not to remove too much material.

+1 for the Nut Sauce (http://www.bigbends.com/) the creaking is done.

Well, you can hide it, or fix it. It's nice to have choices.

Ya know, I once had a McCarty that had an inherent creak about it, I never suspected the nut, no tuning issues whatsoever! I always felt it lied somewhere within the middle region of the neck, somehow related to the truss rod? That's what I thought?

The string might not be binding so that it would affect tuning, but if it's a bit rough inside, it can catch and make that damn clicking sound. Pet peave of mine.
