cheers :D aye...he's a'wright. :o
it's my first use of the SM57 - the pod seemed to perform reasonably okay - i'll have wait for Mr Phillips to bring out some of his toys :)

I would back off the mic to about 6-10 inches away, it will then take away some of the scratchiness and let the speaker cab add a bit more depth to the tone.

cheers Gary... that's what i was gonna try next :)
that's what it suggested in the manual that came with it. (should've read it first - doh!!)
volumewise... does it have to be pumpin' for a good recording? (most of the time i record after 10pm)
ps it was placed right against the cloth!! :o

NO it doesnt have to be mega loud but the laws of physics do come into it.
The speaker has to be moving air to make the best tone os therefore if you have a 100watt marshall with a 100watt speaker it will take a fair amount of drive to get the cone moving.
That is why a lot of the best guitar recordings are done with small amp's if you use a little 12 watter at full tilt with a low wattage speaker such as a greenback then the thng will just sing as you are shifting a lot of air.
I personaly use a Session 15 watt valve amp and at three quarter volume it is still loud but is driving the speaker nicely.
I will see if I can e-mail you an example of the sound that I get.

cheers Gary. that'd be cool. :)
John P is gonna come round to show me some yellowjackets that should help a wee bit with the sound at lower volumes.

Yellow jackets will help get the tube cooking and drop your power to around 18 watts.
It will change the tone and you will need to add a bit more bass as El84's are a bit zinggy.
Let me know if you like them as I have a spare set that I can let you have for a good price.
