Recently, I swapped out the bridge #7 for a JB (left the neck #7 in) and noticed something odd. Whenever I put the pickup switch in the middle position, and roll back the volume on the NECK pickup to about 9-9.5, the tone alters considerably. Let me go on record by stating how much I LOVE THE TONE when that happens...it gives the guitar a super throaty sound, kind of like a wah pedal being slightly opened. The crunch and spank is incredible.

Is this normal, or did my sloppy soldering job do something to alter the tone? I'm curious because I really don't dig the JB by itself in the bridge, but with the pickup selector in the middle position...YOWZAHH!!! I don't want to change out the JB if this happened by accident...but if it is normal, I may drop something else in there.

Hey Erik, I can't really answer you question... :(

But answer mine: Is this the same guitar that had some SD Custom in the bridge? If so, which one and why did you swap it out for a JB?

I'm going with a Custom 5 in my SC Trem bridge - if Seymour ever gets around to winding it up!

Sounds like you could have wired the pickups out of phase which will give the tone you're describing.

Yep, it's the one. I've had a Custom, Custom/Custom, and Custom 5 in the bridge. I'll admit that the Custom 5 sounded the best (so of course I swapped it out for the JB) and I should have left it in.

Budman2K, I may have accidentally done that...but they are very full sounding when played alone or when the volume knobs are on "10" in the middle position. It is one of those things that is sort of bugging me because I don't know what happened...but the tone is just amazing. When using that "mistake" position in a band situation, it cuts like a friggin' razor!!!

If it isn't a mistake, and it happens all the time, the Custom 5 is going back in there. Dan, you'll like that pickup.

Good to hear. I'm looking for something along the lines of the current #6 (i.e. vintage-y) with more punch and a little more heat.

I'm thinking it'll work out nicely.

Yup. that's the Peter Green trick. Wired out of phase with the neck, the volume will alter amount of phasing so to speak. Ver cool mod. Done this to my Les Pauls for years.

Thanks,

You did it because the JB and the PRS pickups were out of phase, to begin with. There is no standard to these things.

There are two ways you can make pickups out of phase. Either reverse the wiring of one of the pickups, or flip the magnet in one of the pickups. (Only do one. If you do both, the pickups are back in phase.)

If one of your pickups has an independent ground for the base, you can simply flip the hot and ground leads for the coils (leaving the independent ground for the base in place), and that pickup will be out of phase.

If each pickup has its base ground and coil ground integrated into the braided shield (as vintage pickups have), it will be simpler to flip the magnet in one of the pickups.

Thanks Jim. Have I previously stated how much I dig that tone??? ;) In other guitars where pickups are out of phase, there is usually a noticable drop in volume. That simply isn't the case with this guitar...the volume remains but the way it cuts through the band increases exponentially.

Damn...just when I was digging the LP, this has to come along and happen.

WOW Dan! I am kind of surprised to hear this. I've read nothing but praise from you about PRS #6's in your SCT! I was also figuring if they were that good I wouldn't have to swap 'em out when my SCT arrives. Probably inevitable though. My Standard ended up with SD's in it. I really liked them in that guitar.

It's mostly a matter of matching my amp setting a little better. The Custom is so hot (Screamin' Demon) and the SC Trem doesn't hit the preamp with the same level. But I would say that (perhaps with the exception of #10s), the #6s are the best pickups PRS makes. I hope that with the Custom 5 , I don't lose the awesome split sounds I have now.

Like I said though, I ain't touching the beautiful neck pickup!

Now Now, stay open minded. You haven't heard it yet! :D

I believe Dan is looking for more punch out of his Bridge pup to come closer to his Lester

EDIT: Doh, Dan beat me!

My guitar playing life is such an open book! ;)

For the record, I want Les Paul punch, but I want to preserve the SC Trem's distinctive tone.

Nah, I just pay attention when the Pres. of the SCT Society speaks! :p

HAH!! :D

Now I intend to give the stock pups a VERY FAIR try when I get my SCT. I am really hoping I like them. I do know that my musical taste/style is not far from Dan's and more punch in the bridge is not an unreasonable wish. I'll just have to see.
