Always fun to hear some stories like that. I went to Silver Strings in St. Louis a couple months ago. That guy has sold guitars to everyone from A to Z. You should see the pictures he has on the wall in that little shop.
Tom,
It is so ironic that you posted this...just this morning I was reading an article written years ago by Steve Vai. He was describing his setup for songs on the Skyskraper album and I was shocked to see that one of his main guitars was built by Tom Anderson. It blows me away that I never knew that.
Very cool!!

Cool beans man. :D
That's a cool story Tom, thanks for posting the link. I do love Vai's website, I forgot that he has a ton of information and eye candy about his guitars. Just what every growing GAS pain boy needs! Reading Tom A's story about meeting Vai later is a story that I can certainly relate to. I turned into a blabbering idiot (some would say I just showed my "quality" :o ) last year when I got to meet and talk with Ty, Jerry, and Doug from King's X.
Cool story, thanks for posting that, Tom. Sure makes Vai sound like a jerk, though.

Sure makes Vai sound like a jerk, though.I don't think Tom meant it that way. Steve is one of the nicest and most approachable guys you'll ever meet.

I agree about Tom - it seemed like he was being very gracious about it. I've always heard Steve described as a nice guy. The way Tom described the way Steve treated him sounded kind of dissonant with that to me.
My opinion: there is a well-known very adept guitar player who has met with some high-level sideman and movie part success. He is backstage at some big rock concert. A guy comes up to him and says that he built a guitar for him at one time. He doesn't remember the guy. So he looks at the guy like he's crazy and blows the guy off.
In my opinion, that's not what I would call nice and approachable behavior.
But everyone has their moments. Maybe Steve was having a bad day.
