What pedal will get close to Satriani's tone ala "Flying in a Blue Dream"? I can't seem to find one with that fluid sustain and harmonic edge. I have a Carr Mercury and a Siegmund Midnight Special...both sound awesome but are cleaner/vintage-type amps. I don't want another amp..just a pedal (probably solid-state?) Thanks in advance!

Joe Satriani used a Boss DS-1 Distortion into a Roland Jazz Chorus 120 for that record.
He reportedly said he was trying to get out of the Marshall sound...:eek:Why anyone would want to do THAT is beyond me.

Check out the Tonebone Classic, you can get some great High Gain tones out of that for a Satch tone.

Thanks for the info! I think I will look into a modded version of the DS-1....I've had the orig. in the past (circa 1980) and it never did much for me. As a matter of fact, Satch is probably the ONLY ONE that could make a DS-1 and JC120 sound good:eek:

Satch could make a hondo through a home stereo sound good.

There's something to be said for looking into a DiMarzio Fred, at least for his singing lead tone a la "Bells of Lal (part 2)". This is a juiced-up PAF with a nominal resistance of 10K and a lot more high end. I just picked one up for $50, it's not prohibitive, and you can split it.

The trick with the DS-1 that work for me is to set the tone control around 9 0'clock and run the gain at arounnd 2-4 o'clock.

I was never able to get a sound I like from that pedal into my Marshall until I picked those settings up from a pick of Satch's gear. It sounded pretty much exactly like the Time Machine live disk. It never occurred to my to turn down the treble that much but it works. Each pedal is a bit different so you have to experiment to find the sweet spot of each pedal.

I ended up getting the Keeley DS-1...arrived today and I gave it a test drive....very impressive pedal! BLOWS AWAY the stock version.....great tone and sensitivity range. I had the tone at 9;00, gain at 3;00, and level at 9;00 (lots of volume with this one). I was using an American Strat through my Midnight Special. The MS vol was just into break-up territory. I was able to play a killer, slightly edgy clean tone with light touch...almost no distortion surfaces and the "seeing eye" light doesn't light-up. Then with a little more pressure on the strings, I could coax more and more gain. This pedal is VERY touch sensitive. The "Flying/Blue dream" Satch tone is in there as well. So far...so good! Thanks for the help, everyone. I was able to cut to the chase and not spend a bunch of money. On a side note, I was also getting a very convicing old Garcia tone (early 70's) as well...go figure? Ala "Turn on your love light". I think the Siegmund MS was responsible for that one:D
