Based on your personal tastes, which guitar player gets "the tone"?

Anytime the tone question is asked, I immediately think of Ty Tabor. In particular, his doubled solo on the track 'Mr. Wilson'.

I listened to 'Axis Bold as Love' yesterday and I think Jimi is right on top of the tone equation. Just great Strat tones all over that album.

Being the Black Crowes fan that I am, I can't leave out Marc Ford's work on 'The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion', especially the track 'Sometimes Salvation'. That first note he hits in the solo section sends chills up my spine!

There are so many for me, I can only list a few.

1. Undoubtedly EVH on VH1. There are some STILL looking for that tone.

2. RUSH. Lifeson's gear/tones change from album to album, but he always seems to capture just the right tones for the music at the time, they are all different, and all good.

3. Ty Tabor. In one word, excellent.

4. John Sykes on Whitesnake. Not a tone I'd want for myself, but his guitar playing and sound were a big part of that album's success IMO.

5. Andy Summers, Police era. For me, that man defined the use of the chorus pedal, since day 1, I've tried to achieve that sound, and I still do.

I'm sure I'll be back later with more.

i guess you mean "the tone" for the type of music they play. i like different tones for different kinds of music obviously.

i'll agree with early van halen. i particularly like VH II, fair warning, and 1984.

i think warren haynes "gets it." he always seems to have great tones, and they fit for the music and band he's playing with.

and i think jimmy page was a master at getting great tones especially on recordings. he used so many different tones, but they always seemed to work for the song. he was great at layering multiple guitars with different sounds, too. he's a real genius in the studio, IMO.

i love almost all of ty's stuff, and he usually has great tones. but i thought the last album was pretty blah. it just sounds digital and lifeless, and this is coming from a POD user myself. most of his other stuff is pretty inspiring, though.

Besides the obvious choices...I kind of loved Steve Vai's tone from Eat'm and Smile. I love distortion that is creamy, yet articulate. He's using a lot of 7th and 11th chords, yet you can still hear the individual notes in the distortion.

No one has mentioned Peter Green yet, so here's a vote for Greenie.

His tone in "Green Manalishi" still kills me every time I listen.

As does Billy Gibbons

I'm going to go way back and say that Clapton's tone on the Beano Bluesbreaker album is one of the most definable tones in guitar history. Other tones that come to mind would be: Robben Ford, SRV, and Santana.

The Rev Billy F. Gibbons.

I'm into other players a bit more, but Billy's is the tone against which all others are measured. IMO, it's not even close. I hear the word "tone" and I think of Gibbons, I listen to ZZ and the first thing I think is "this is the best tone in the world". Specifically La Grange and Tush.

It's the one I'm after.

David Grissom gets me everytime. His storyville and melencamp stuff is killer, and with Joe Ely, "live at lberty luch" is amazing.

Also Love Robben, SRV.Clapton, the usual subjects, but when I need my face ripped off, it's Grissom. Tasteful chops as well.

David Lindley
Ry Cooder

To me, "getting it" is being able to infuse each note with your personality - you can listen to one note of any of these people and identify the player.

I'm showing my age as well as my musical preferences, but I dig Mark Tremonti's tone, especially his clean tone on Weathered.

Hey John,
I'm playing 'BOP 'TILL YOU DROP' as I'm reading this!! Amazing!!

I went to see Ry Cooder every time he came to the UK - haven't seen him for ages!
I've also looked for some David Lindley cd's on ebay, and none have appeared yet.

Cheers,
Rob

Page on Led Zeppelin II. That's about all I need.

As far as acoustic tone goes, I have a White Album fetish.

Another overlooked on this thread so far, Jeff Beck.

His tone on "People get ready" is phenominal.
