I made a quick attempt at recording some clips of the Omega Amps modded Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Here goes....

This one is the clean channel, volume full up, no boost, using the guitar's volume to vary gain. This is with the stock Eminence Legend 125 speaker loaded:
Clean channel, stock Emi Legend 125 speaker (http://home.centurytel.net/flanneldrawers/HRD-clean-full-stockemi125.mp3)

This one is the same as above except with a Celestion G12-65 speaker loaded:
Clean channel, Celestion G12-65 (http://home.centurytel.net/flanneldrawers/HRD-clean-full-G1265.mp3)

This one is the drive channel with the gain control set around 11 o'clock, G12-65 loaded:
Drive mode, G12-65 (http://home.centurytel.net/flanneldrawers/hrd-drive-slobek-g1265.mp3)

This is the More Drive channel, gain set to 11 o'clock, G12-65 loaded:
More Drive mode, G12-65 (http://home.centurytel.net/flanneldrawers/hrd-drive-loner-g1265.mp3)

The amp is still loaded with the stock Sovtek tubes - not particularly great sounding but they're all I have on hand at the moment.

All were recorded with a Shure SM-57, close mic'd just off the voice coil (not carefully placed). Audio interface is a Lexicon Omega USB. Recorded at 24bit/48KHz into SonarXL4, a little reverb and delay added to guitar tracks, then saved as .mp3's via Sound Forge 6.

This was a quick process. I only had about 90 minutes to set up, record, swap speaker, record more, mix, save, and upload. I apologize for the hack playing and marginal recording results.

Wadaya think?

I think it sounds incredible!!! What is the cost of the mod from Omega? Good Job Deaj!

Thanks Blueser! :)

The circuit mod was $250 plus shipping to get the chassis there and back. I'm into the whole thing for less than $800. Big tone for that money. I'm really enjoying this amp alot!

Nice sounds! Your playing showcased the amp perfectly. I don't know about that Eminence speaker though.. sounds thin. I'd say you've got a killer little amp there.

I wonder what Jim's Custom 100 is like?

Wow, nice! The drive channel sounds really smooth now. What guitar did you use?

Very nice! TAG would think it's "very, very, very good!!!" :)

Have my HRD on the 'bay right now, but you are giving me second thoughts. Are such mods posted somewhere online, or is this secrect special Omega mojo?

GregThere are a few mods posted here:

...and, from what I've heard, these do improve the amp.

The Omega Amps mod is alot more involved. The Drive and More Drive modes are completely revoiced. If you're curious you should give Jim a call to discuss. $250 is pretty cheap considering the resulting amp.

I have to say the reviews of Jim's work sold me - not the clips.

Great sounds Deaj! Glad you finally got around to posting some sample clips. Your seriously making me consider the drive/more drive mods for my Deville. Although, my drive mode doesn't sound bad. More drive on the other hand....a bit to funky in a bad way for me.

Just proof that everyone's ears are different. For the cleans the Emi sounds more natural to me. The Celestion sounds like the amp has a blanket over it for the clean clips. Still nice playing Deaj. However, my gut tells me that the Celestion probably sounds better for the Drive and more drive.

Thanks! :)

I do like the creamy character of the Celestion for the Drive modes.

I went to a jam on Friday night and took the modded HRD and my pedalboard with me. I set volumes and tones controls for the room during set-up and left it alone all evening. I had an opportunity to use all three modes and pedals for both OD on the clean mode and boost for drive modes. I spent most of the evening in the drive mode using my guitar volume for clean tones occasionally switching to the clean mode for clean tones with more girth or to the more drive mode for a heavier overdrive. It performed wonderfully! I had a great tone all night that cut just where it should. I'd kind of expected to spend some of the evening tinkering with it but I never touched the amp. I did have to tweak the drive pedals a little from the settings I use with the Fuchs but this was quick and easy as well. I couldn't be more pleased with it now!

I've used the Fuchs ODS in the same setting with the same players and it also performed wonderfully. The Fuchs takes a little more attention to technique (responds better to a light touch) to get the most out of it but the results are amazing! The Omega modded HRD, on the other hand, is forgiving and feels easy to play - like most vintage amps I've used in the past. It's very expressive and toneful!

The stock Emi Legend 125 is growing on me. It has likely begun to break in by now. I didn't find myself wanting for anything during Friday's jam. This has turned out to be one of the best amps I've ever played through!

Sounds great, especially with the original speaker.
