Along with the news that we will be back up within a few weeks with only 3 weeks of lost data; it is also high time we had a proper "The Gear Page" Logo. We would like to request member's with graphic skills to submit logos to us for consideration.

The Administrators and Moderators will choose one. We will give full recognition and a link to your site if you want one on the bottom of the main page. Roughly 32.5k size; 730px W X 139px H; JPEG or GIF format.

Submit as many as you like. We want to hit the ground with the new logo up when we reopen the doors.

Send your submissions to: scott@spetersonmusic.com

Scott Peterson
05-03-2006, 09:00 PM
Also we will be accepting submissions till 5pm EDT May 10, 2006.

The winner (and everyone else that submits) will receive the exact pay scale that the Administrators, Moderators and everyone else who volunteers their time and efforts for the Gear Page.... $00.00.

After the cutoff time, we'll mull the choices, choose one and you'll see it when the Gear Page reopens.

You guys are doing well! I am going to admit that I personally like "iplaydirty's" concept. It needs some work, but I remember buying some fake plates for my studio rack that were truly funny. Perhaps you guys can work on something similar. Please know that I am only one admin and that my mentioning that I liked one idea so far does NOT mean that this would be the concept chosen!

In regards to Crazyquilt's design:

I think the URL should stay there. If people want to link to the site and use the design (obviously a smaller version would be necessary) as their hyperlink, the URL sitting there is good interface design. Or if someone wanted to use the image for whatever reason

Yeah, the pics above kinda leaves out the recording forum, I don't see any sexy API lunchboxes up there :D No need for slogans or URL, if they can't look at their address bar to find out how they got here then I don't want to hear their opinion on the best tube screamer :p

I wish I had a big 4x12 I could have layed it all on to have a basketweave in the background. :D I just tried to capture a little bit of everything from vintage to modern with the look. the echoplex one, or something dynamic, maybe like a rolling filmloop.com type of bar (with no audio) that changes regularly or a CSS'd bar up there instead of a static .jpg so it scales and the text can change.

Am not that keen on taglines or the url that someone is already obviously at, or the analogy of a metal gear wheel with gear as in musical gear equipment, but it's just my .02 here.

whatever you end up doing i'm sure will be fine.

The vote thread will go up next week. For those submitting logos, please consult the initial post: sharing a logo here does not constitute official submission.

Feel free to express preferences but keep in mind that a lot of "I like this one" posts make it hard to pick out new submissions amongst all the pseudo-votes. Also keep in mind that not all of the submissions have been posted in this thread.

Unfortunately this is a bad week for me or I'd take a stab. So a few opinions...(If anyone cares)

http://myspace-717.vo.llnwd.net/00709/71/74/709174717_l.jpgThis almost looks like recording gear. The (d*mble) reference is cute, but no need to stir the pot. I REALLY dig the clean photoshop work. Very tasty.

Here is my submission...

Here's mine. I sent it to Scott, but, of course, I gotta share.I like the concepts, but overall thumbs down from me. (Not saying I could do better!) Don't mean to be negative, but there were enough positive posts, that I felt the need to balance it out.

I decided to try one more, if anyone else can pull off a better headstock design I think that would be a cool idea.

My only suggestion if that was the route chosen is to do away with the slogans and either pick one or none.

Hey Alec, size can be adjusted easily.Yes and no. Oftentimes, squishing an image (like the one that's a fair bit out of size) will yield poor results.

Speaking for this admin, if it's not worth the creator's time to submit an appropriately-sized image, it's not worth my time to try resize it. I played that game enough times working on the PRS Forum CDs when folks would submit songs that were too long and expected me to edit them down. That's not happening here.

If you want it considered, submit an image that's the right size.

I told scott I can do whatever modifiations to the image that are neccessary, I wouldnt expect him to do it. As for consideration, tgp can use it if they like or not - either way is fine with me, but ill keep your opinion in mind if you guys are ever looking for free design work and will pass on submitting. Peace-JaysonThe "rules" for entries were clearly articulated in the first thread. Since there are some non-compliant ones listed here, I remind folks of those rules (along with an explanation of why) so their submissions don't get canned and your response is basically "I'm not going to donate my services to TGP ever again"?

I'll save the elaborate comments for when we vote, but I really like the gaspedals one, big al, and the black and white outline amp panel one (whoever that was). Looking forward to voting.

BTW, you can most definitely resize an image without stretching/scewing :) I would just say that the FINAL submissions should be size like was posting at www.thegearpage.net, but for this thread it shouldn't be a big deal...

Are you an admin for PRS or TGP?Yes, actually, Alec is one of the TGP admins. Not "putting limits on your creativity" is all very well & good, but when you do an illustration for a particular space requirement, that's the space requirement. Anything outside of that is gonna just hit the slush pile, even if it's the next Mona Lisa.

The more logos I look at, and the more I think about it, the more I prefer a simpler approach, with fewer colors & without the literal gear. (Yes, I'm invalidating my own initial entry.) There's less eye fatigue, but still something catchy.

I really like your entry, for example, Gaspedal -- although I'm not so hip on the green (tho' I know how easy that is to change.) I also like Maine-iac's amp-front design & Ducati's Echoplexish banner.

The one thing that several of the banners have that doesn't work for me is overly intricate, difficult to read, or overly 'stylish' fonts. In my experience, a title banner shouldn't just look good, it should be readily comprehensible. They also, again, in my experience, don't 'wear' well over time. That's what tends to orient me towards the plainer designs -- a few colors, a strong outline, and a font that doesn't get in the way of the words.

All of these are things I'm bad at. :D

Take some of those hard-earned dollars and buy yourself some new lingerie. It'll make all that crabbiness disappear.

Fantastic entries; this is very difficult.

We will be choosing our faves, limiting it down and then opening the voting once we open the doors. We can't have round after round of voting on them all; we are pulling Administrative privilege (if there is such a thing) and choosing our 3 faves each (Scott, Brian and Alec) and will open the polls once TGP is back open.

One thing to keep in mind.... One issue with some of the really good ones, (the Echoplex one in particular - check: http://www.gibson.com/Products/Amplifiers/Echoplex/ ) is copyright and trademark issues. Gibson owns the Echoplex name and brand. Many guys used Gibson guitars and Fender amps; even stylized ones will, IMHO, be issues long term. If we step on copyright and/or TM marks we are going to go down in flames. Please keep that in mind when submitting or designing.

As for colors, we would like something somewhat along our existing color scheme; if at all possible.

Keep them coming folks - deadline is tomorrow - May 10, 5pm EDT..

Wow, narrowing it down to three is going to be tough. There are so many good ones, it's now getting downright confusing.
I was wondering about some of the copyright/trademark issues that could arise. Although, I think Henry J. would be totally cool and let us use Gibby stuff. ;) :D .

I am sure you guys will pick some good ones to choose from.

Ouch. I hadn't considered that; I might have, had I known that was a concern. I'll see if I can retool mine to reflect that request in the time remaining. Hopefully, others in the same boat will be able to do so; it'd be a shame if some of the stronger entries were disqualified for reasons the creators couldn't have known until now.

I actually wonder if there would really be a trademark issue with this design. It doesn't use the Echoplex name.

Gibson doesn't appear to be interested in using the echoplex design on their current echoplex product. http://www.gibson.com/Products/Amplifiers/Echoplex/

I really hope you guys don't pull that entry. It's such a non-issue. Have you paid attention to recent design trends? Entire companies have popped up (some big ones, like urban outfitters, etc, joining the fray) appropriating and mutating classic brand identities. Haven't seen any disappear, and plenty have been fairly offensive (ie, no permision would have been granted for use).

On the link you supply, there is nothing remotely similar to the classic echoplex logo. Am i missing something? If they've abandoned it as a brand identity, do copyright/TM issues still apply? NB that nowhere in ducati's entry is "echoplex" mentioned.

Finally, remember that 99% of C&D letters will never be acted upon.
Especially if you respond in kind with any kind of cogent response stating how you are not infringing on complaintant's cr/tm. Worst case scenario - they insist on C&D and you D.

I really think some of the recent legal worries have been unfounded. Of course, just because one is paranoid doesn't mean someone isn't watching
you; the corollary must be that jsut because you're paranoid, doesn't mean someone IS watching you either....

Having said that, let me also laud you guys for everything else that you do. I've always been a silent supporter of your policies, and am very cognizant that it's your website to do with what you want, and to run as you see fit. I just had to voice an alternate viewpoint and encourage that you use the balls you got -- if someone barks, just bark back. (Sometimes mamallian territorial behavior is just mamallian territorial behavior.... and barking is as far as it goes)

It would be silly to pull the "echoplex" inspired logo just because you can draw similarities to the rings!

I would see more of a problem with the logo that has the SG, Marshall stack, etc because those are the shapes of copyrighted designs...

For whatever it's worth, I've been an advertising art director for 10 years too and I agree with the comments of baald and gaspedals.net and play by tone.

I bet if someone did a good search of logo and package design you would find tons of designs with the curving lettering and circle designs very similar like Ducati's logo.

We all know you can throw a ping-pong ball in a music store and chances are it will land on a guitar or amp that looks like a Fender or Gibson but isn't.

If this worried thinking applies to the "echoplex" design, it should also apply to most of the entries. I can easily identify the shapes of products from Fender, Gibson, and other companies. In fact there are only a few of posted designs that do not depict a well known brand in some way.

The next step is that we probably shouldn't even be allowed to discuss these company's products in a public manner. Every time we say Fender™ do we should have a disclaimer stating that Fender is a registered trademark of blah blah blah etc...

As you can probably tell, my vote is still for the "echoplex" design.
and if not that design, then I vote for mine. :D ha ha

Or start over with a re-do with the rule that no shapes in the design can be recognizable.

I'll pass the logo design by our new legal team. If they say that it is no problem, we'll consider it. I think that many members would be royally ticked off at me if TGP was sued because I acted in a reckless manner and "took a chance". A big part of my job with TGP is to make sure that it continues to exist. If the design is not considered, it would be because I am doing my job.

Sued? :o

lol, the worst that could happen is a Cease and Desist letter (C&D). They say, "Please remove this or we might throw down on you". And C&Ds mostly full of hot air anyway. But thats the worse that could happen.

There is no corporation, no business entity, we make no money, so it wouldn't be any fun to sue us.

Here's a more extreme story that happened to me. I was working on an ad that required us to shoot a photo. As we were planning the shoot, which would include a car in the foreground and the city skyline in the background, my fearful co-worker/producer - told the photographer and I that we can't include the city skyline because someone owns the copyright to it.

We were like - huh??????!!!!!!!!! I said o.k. you better contact that person and get permission then.

Of course we shot the photo. No one owns the appearance of the city's skyline.

I know this isn't the same at the banner on the gear page. I just thought it was a funny story to pass along.
