I own an original '62 JMI AC30 and it is the best sounding amp I have ever played or heard. It is the tone by which I judge most amps. Now I own other amps which I like alot and that sound great but for the tones I am looking for my Vox excels. Anyways I have always tried to find another amp to have that could compete with my Vox. I don't like firing up the Vox all the time for a few reasons and the main one is my Vox hums pretty bad. Well I have tried numerous amps and all have failed. That is until I bought this Dr Z Stingray. I bought a Stingray 1 x 12 loaded with a Blue from Stu at Fatsound and let me tell you that it is as close to my Vox as I have ever come. It truly has all the great qualities with the exception of it being a tad stiffer. It cleans up from the guitar volume as good as my Vox. And my Vox is the best amp I have ever played at cleaning up from the guitar volume. The overdrive on this Stingray just oozes tone. I love it. So if anyone is looking for that Vintage Vox tone and doesn't want to have to worry about it breaking down the Stingray is the answer. The amps layout is ultra simple as well with just 3 knobs, all of which work really well at sculpting the sound to get your tone.

It works really well. You can make the tone dark or bright and when you use it with the cut knob you really get alot of diverse tones.

This is good to hear, I have Stingray #49 on the way. I'm super psyched.

To each his own. He might not like Captain Morgan's and Diet Coke but that is my alltime favorite drink. If we all liked the same tones it would be a boring world. I love mine and it is the closest I have ever heard to a Vintage Vox and since I have a '62 AC30 to play right next to it it is an easy a/b situation.

Cool, procos.
How then would you compare other AC30-inspired amps like the Matchless DC-30 and/or Bad Cat Black Cat to the Stingray (or original)? (If memory serves correct, you've tried 'em)

The Stingray and Vox have a more organic quality. To me the Matchless C30's always sounded more immediate and in your face. The Matchless stuff seemed to cut right through and have more bite to it. The Vox tones to me are more rounded and have a different sounding midrange. As for the Black Cat that amp has more of a low midrange emphasis and is softer sounding than both the Vox and Matchless. Both the Vox and Stingray have more chime to them than the Matchless. I also think the Vox and Stingray are a thicker sounding tone over the Matchless. The Matchless stuff isn't thin by any means but it just doesn't seem as thick to me as my Vox. Not the best explanation but the best I can do. Hope it helps.

Never played an RSA 31 but I'll have a RSA 23 in the house today to compare them to. My wife and I just had a baby on Sunday though so I might not be able to crank it for awhile. Have to wait until see takes the new baby out for awhile so I can turn up my amps.

Chuck - sincere congratulations!
All the very best to you & yours (& get some rest). Thanks much. This is my third child and by far the best baby we have had to date. I don't mean that I love him anymore just that he doesn't cry very much at all. So far he has slept very well at night and only gets up to feed and then back to bed. He doesn't cry at all during the day. Might have lucked out. My first born, Charlie, had colic and cried every night for about 6 weeks between Midnight and 4 A.M. that was a nightmare. Especially considering it was my first.
Chuck
Congrats Chuck!
My firstborn had colic too...but our 2nd was great.
They're all grown up, but I remember all too well the long nights.
Still, they turned out to be good human beings and gainfully employed.
Cant beat that!
All the best to your better half, hope she is getting some much needed rest.

Congradulations, for the 3rd child and then the 'Ray. Got to have enough amps so everybody does not fight. Is the 1 blue able to handle the 'ray's ~30 watts?

GaryWell not on full power. I am running the Stingray at 4 and then hit it with a Landgraff MOD. I do however run it through my AC30 cab with 2 blues and it sounds glorious. My plan is to wait until the 50 Watt Gold Celestion Alnico's come out and will buy one of those to put in the Stingray. I didn't want another 2 x 12 combo because of the weight and size. I figure if the Cele Gold is as good as they say it will be I'll be all set. For now when I want to crank it I'll just use the AC30 cab.
BTW thanks Steve for the well wishes. I am psyched about my new baby.

congratulations on the babe! Having one that sleeps peacefully is a bonus. On the amp front, i've been very impressed with the Heritage Briton, which is very Vox like. sounds like i need to try the Stingray at some point. I've always wanted to like the Dr. 's amps, but the ones i played though always sounded hard and flat to me , though they did rock. Haven't played through one in 5 years or so, though.
