View Full Version : A "Real" man's tele?

mine has tone chambers, belly cutout and arm contour. Oh wait! It has a non-bigsby vibrato, too! Oh yeah! Humbuckers! two positions!
I still think a real man can still play this and it will still be a tele.

umm, that would be "teleism", right?Yeah.
Just because it says Tele on the headstock, don't make it a Tele, at least in my book. IMO, Fender USA makes exactly THREE models of true Telecaster, the 52RI, the '50s Classic and the CS Nocaster.
The rest are red-headed stepchildren. Fender Japan makes more (and better) Teles.

pbradt
05-02-2006, 10:18 PM
And the 63 Relic?Yeah, I'll go along with that. I'll even go with the '62RI. But if it's got a flat fretboard, jumbo frets, a non-trad bridge or humbuckers, to me, it's not a Tele, it's a red-headed stepson.
Anyone can call their guitar anything they want. Just don't ask me to call it a Tele if I don't think it is.
pbradt
05-02-2006, 10:20 PM
Oh? The Gatton doesn't count?Fender hasn't made the Gatton for a LONG time.
The American Series do not have a Tele bridge, they have that awful plate.

WTF is a Mel???
Melancon...as in Gerard...cajun luthier from the swampy southland.
He makes VERY nice guitars of all stripes.
My definition of a Tele is either the '62, '63 or '67 Custom Shop reissues.
The nocaster should be called the nocaster/nofrets model. I HATE vintage frets.
Give me one of the above custom shop models, or an honest to God REAL '67 and I'll be one happy camper.

this is the real man's tele
<pink telecaster>
No way!!
No proper man can play a pink guitar. That's why Justin Hawkins uses pink, and no one else does.
A 'true' Tele has to have the following...
- Singlecut, non-contoured body, in a Tele outline, of course... and it has to be solid ash or alder.
- Either a rosewood fretboard/maple neck or all maple neck
- 2 pickups, one angled at the bridge, one tiny chrome jobbie at the neck
- The original colours- Butterscotch Blonde, Honey Blonde, Red, Black, etc... oh what the hell, custom colours can come play too :D maybe Ocean Turquoise... Hot Rod Red... *drools*
- No maple top
- 21 frets
- One circular string tree
- One white/black/white pickguard, or a plain ol' black one :D
- 6 strings
- 3 brass saddles
- 1 volume, 1 tone, 3-way selector, mounted in a chrome control plate
- The bridge with the raised edges, not these new comfy ones...
- A Fender Telecaster logo on the headstock.
- Circular jack socket on the side
- 2 strap buttons...
Was that obsessive? :p

A real man's Tele wouldn't have a "belly cutout." In fact, the word "belly" doesn't belong anywhere near a man's guitar. "Belly" sounds like a word a woman would use when speaking to a child.

Hey Sanhozay, I really enjoyed the R6 I bought from you, but didn't have it long...I went through five Historic LP's to find the one for me..R4, R4 Oxblood, your R6 goldtop, and an R6 Cloud 9... finally settled on the R4 Black Beauty. The Alnico V "staple" neck pup is simply beautiful. She's fairly heavy...just under 10lbs., but I don't mind a my LP to be a little meaty.
But we digress...Teles (Real Man Teles) need to be light-weight IMHO...My 60 Custom is under 7 lbs. What do you think? What say the other Tele Men?

Yeah, I saw the guitars that you posted in the emporium and noticed your siggy changes. I do the same thing; keep trying until something moves me. I do have a few regrets in the R6 I sold you is one of them. I struggled a bit with the neck but everything else was very good!
My next journey will be for a good ES335. I've attempted before and came up goose eggs. There are many stones to turn over, though.
Tele...I have the best one...a '95 Nocaster with lots of mods. Small frets and a vintage radius wreaks havoc on my hands and I cannot tolerate. Actually, the small wire isn't the curse as much as the board. I need a flatter radius. Period. GVCG Lollar winds are in my guitar and they slay. Best/sweetest/fattest/raunchiest bridge pickup I've ever played. Greasy and chimey - BB to Zep - devil delish and amazing grind at full throttle.

I have one of the blue florat reissue Teles; my bandmates gave me real grief about it - "girly Tele". Then I swapped out the neck for one BEEFY Warmoth neck (HUGE - I mean a table-leg with frets), a Callaham bridge, and Barden pickups. Then I strung it up with finger-punishing .012-gauge strings. It's a bear to play, but it REALLY really has that "From Hell" Tele tone. Brass-knuckle twang. Tell ya what though - nobody calls it a girly-Tele anymore. Now's it's known as the "Hippy-on-Steriods" Tele"...

Although to answer your question, one of the other lifers I work and play guitar with plays a Fender plank. So by your entering arguments, real men do play teles. Although I think my buddy plays one because he's a member of the Church Of Albert Collins. I doubt he's concerned with his real man status (although this thread has me questioning mine.)

hey bulldog - deals appear every once in a while. i got that '66 tele 3 years ago on ebay for $1300 - i got a refret & put the 6 way on for another $250. at the same timei knew someone who bought a relic '62 tele re issue for ~$2200.
esnipe is your friend...

With a little hard work, this fake tele can turn the most wimpish digits into bully-busting tele-tongs!

(Grosh bari-tele strung with a comfy .12 - .65 set) 18 frets of fun!

It's made by fender, so it MUST be real! It even has an extra switch!

Heresy! Also, I see no switch on the control plate, just the one on the upper bout. Further evidence that someone at Fender deserves a good flogging. Not the one who designed it, the one who approved it.

do "real men" actually play tele's?
huh!
i did NOT know that!
most of the real men i know are railroad linemen, forestry rangers, boxers, road managers & military lifers.
dt / spltrcl
I, for one, love and play Tele's all the time... but I probably know far too many Show Tunes to be a "real man".

The J5 tele makes me cringe.
That's the lovechild of a tele and 5 ugly old men while staring at each other make love in a mirror.

LOL.... As ugly as the chair is it is the most comfortable chair in the house. My wife wants to throw it away and I keep telling not to.
The guitar maybe be ugly as well but I totally dig the way it came out. The Rosewood neck from warmoth is super nice and the Fralin pickups have such a great tone.

I was kidding, that guitar is beautiful hahaha
as for the chair, you just gotta tell your wife that beauty and comfort directly oppose each other.
Score some points for yourself.
Sit on her and tell her "see! because you're beautiful, sitting on you hurts"
Then you sit on the chair and comment on how ugly yet comfortable it is.
The master plan.

Here's my Telecaster spank-a-thon contribution. My Grosh on the left, and "The Mutt", a Schecter/Chandler parts guitar I've had for 20 years on the right.

That headstock belongs in adult film, not on a guitar IMO.
How fitting, as John 5's girlfriend/wife is in the adult film industry!

No way!!
No proper man can play a pink guitar. That's why Justin Hawkins uses pink, and no one else does.
james burton was a manly man (played w/ elvis, no) and he not only played a pink tele, but a pink paisley one to boot.
sorry, i just discovered this thread and have had a great time reading it.
hello, my name is mj zero, and i'm a teleholic...
i know that there is a tele forum, but i have to say that it's threads tend to not be as nearly interesting as they are here.
one day i will find my antique violin mccarty w/ a rosewood neck and then i will truly belong here.

Yeah, what a great thread. I recently achieved manhood myself. It's a Highway 1 honey blonde. No compensated brass saddles, no uber-tone pickups, but it's making me one hell of a guitar player! After finding luxury and art in my PRS guitars, a standard tele is really what I needed to take it to the next level. Now I look at what I'm playing instead of drooling over the birds and flames.
