is it possible to use the cache of search engines (google, etc.) to recover SOME of the TGP data? a query of "site:thegearpage.net" on google returns 37,600 results, so there may still be quite a bit of recoverable data in there.

Only if you know at least some part of a thread - I once recovered the first page of our "Last on to post" thread - problem is, even then, you only get the first page with the first 10 posts of each thread.
