To me, it sounds amatureish, like a demo that's not fully developed. The lyrics are blunt and devoid of anything clever. Neil's guitar tone is the worst I've ever heard him use. It's sounds like he's playing with a blown speaker. His voice sounds strained and that vocal chorus in back of him gets old fast. The production of the streamed release is practically non-existent and the whole thing sounds very monotonous to me. "It's all one song" indeed. One track, "Looking for a Leader" has potential but still misses the mark for me. I've read rumors that the CD will be quite different.

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.................. .......
well I think the first CD's will be out the 8th and might be missing a tune or two from a later version (but may be a collectors ed.). You can get the tunes on itunes and other services starting today.
I definitely like the whole thing as a backing track for my guitar, but not to be an egomaniac or anything, i prefer listening to the version with my lead guitar on it.

which version do you like better Zilmo?

You should pimp your band in your sig line. I note you witheld your white stripes comment here... it's cool, I'd rather hear/watch Sleater-Kinney's Modern Girl form the Woods DVD than listen to half the tunes here. Maybe it will grown on me when the DVD-A version is out...

I don't know what you're talking about... that tone rules!
It's just as valid as Billy G's or Eric J's tone.
Maybe not as good as R. Ford, but that's for another thread!

Sounds just like Neil Young to me. Unique. :D
He's not a young pup anymore. Lucky to be alive from what I have read and seen on the tube.
To each his own :)
I love RF's tone on Tigerlily, but hate it on Supernatural. It's real hit or miss with his tone for me.

we have fewer rules now, right?
So can I say that I really like this record on many different levels?

OK, I will.
it's not even a real country anyway.
also, i wanna say that, as much as i dig neil, his albums haven't had the same vibe since david briggs croaked. they made frickin' GREAT, iconoclastic records together.

When I wrote the post on Rusted Guitars, I was still listening to the stream.
It sounded like Neil hurried this stuff out the door. Using his body of work as a yardstick, this stuff misses on every level. If some think that's the holy grail of vintage amp tone, fine. I've heard much better...from Neil himself (ex. MIH tour, Greek Theater, "Words" - brilliant!). The lyrics are embarrassingly clumsy. I'd expect that from some 2-bit grundge band, but not from one of the best songwriters in rock.
As for the band, well I thought after 5 years it was over when the leader bowed out last October but an offer came in ecently to play the OC Pavillion and he said OK, so it looks like we have at least one more night in us. I've had to put regular gigging on the shelf for a while as the real job puts me on the road for weeks at a time with barely a moment's notice.

I dig where he's at with this. Neil's bein' Neil, he gets inpsired and off he goes. Wish I could do it like that.
I really like "Restless Consumer" (track 3)... the heaviest message of the album (because it indicts everybody), you can hear the man is pissed off in a way that only somebody who gives a **** can be pissed off. I like "After the Garden" too. I've listened to the album on looping stream quite a bit over the last few days, and it does grow on ya.

It's OK. I probably won't run out and go buy it, though. FWIW, have any of you heard Neil Young's playing on the movie "Dead Man"? My God, what a MONSTER tone.
I know what you mean, the stuff was definitely rushed, from writing to everything, and the tones and 100 vocalists don't do much for me either. However, unlike Greendale and PW for the most part, there's some RnR in there, and some clever lyrics (which I happened to jam right over as was pointed out by some close listener...), which is fun, fun to jam along with.
I hope you're able to do some of those shows, I remember being down in LA a couple of years back with the family at the HOB/disneyland and wishing I could have caught P. Gase there, my old college roomate who I think did some shows there some years back with his band.

I met Paul in 2000 when we were doing the "Heard of Gold" tribute band. He came to one of our gigs and jammed with us on a few tunes. Later when Dennis reformed the band into a Crazy Horse clone as "The Neil Deal" I turned down the rhythm guitar postition and suggested Paul. He played with them for about a year or so. I did sub & guest with them a few times. Were you at the show we did at HOB a few years back - Neil Deal, 4 Way Street, Led Zepagain?
I wasn't at any of those shows, but read reviews of them and wish I were. When we were down at HOB, it was "Legends" nite...
Sounds like fun!! If you guys do the OC and other shows, you should have someone video it!

The 1st HOB show we did on 8/17/02 was probably the most fun gig I ever did. All three bands that night shared members and I played in 2 of them The HOB staff treated us royally which was a huge departure from the treatment we were used to at club and festival gigs. The headliner, Led Zepagain (http://zepagain.com/), had (and still does) a huge following so we played to a packed room.
As for video recording, these days we're pretty much past wanting to go through that kind of effort. Besides, we're not much to look at :D .
