1993, eh?
I think the RHCP were going through a rough patch at that point. I mean besides Anthony's terrible voice. They had a big hit record and then lost their guitarist John Frusciante to drug rehab (they all could have used a short stay). The guitar player in that video was their transitional guy and he sucked pretty bad. I saw them live on the MTV award show that year and the dude was trying to play Give It Away Now and he had zero soul.
They eventually wound up with Dave Navarro and recorded a terrific record, One Hot Minute. Probably my favorite RHCP record and the only one I can listen to from start to finish.

Not great but not really worse than ZZs live version on the new remastered Dequello. Live recordings are a a crap shoot.

Ouch! That one hurt to watch!!!!!
Saw them boyz back in '87 with the original guitar player- man, he was something else! Let's put it this way- you didn't notice that Anthony K. couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

I didn't think it was that bad, pretty much sounded like a punk band covering ZZ Top. That guitar player is a pretty good player, his name is Arik(sp?) Marshall. He played with Macy Gray for years and I saw him live and really liked the comping and subtle licks that he threw in the songs. He isn't flashy or anything, but I thinks he rocks.

He's not a bad player, he just ain't Hillel Slovak... or John Frusciante... or even Dave Navarro. You need a certain twisted groove to your playing to hang with the RHCPs. Arik Marshall didn't quite have it, as witnessed by his short tenure with the band. By the time his business cards arrived, he'd departed...

It wasn't the guitar playing that was off key!

I wouldn't a thunk it, but I liked it when I saw it. Ya, the guitar player isn't very spastic like the rest of the gang, but he got the job done; quite well.
