Thanks, the white pickguard just wasn't doing anything for that finish, I sent my pickguard to Jeremiah at www.sharp-concepts.com (http://www.sharp-concepts.com) and he made the copper one.

Thanks!!! I can't wait to get it back together, I'm still waiting for the Pu's and my other axes are out being worked on except for my Les Paul, but I'm a strat guy at heart and have been getting quite depressed lately!

on a regular vintage looking guitar, say all white with maple board, i don't know if that headstock would work for me. on the crazy paint jobs, they paint is incredible, and i dont really notice the headstock.
are these guitars mroe on the vintage side soundwise or on the superstrat side of the sound?

are these guitars mroe on the vintage side soundwise or on the superstrat side of the sound?I think they excel at both. They sound better (to me) than any strat I've ever played (alot, although I've played some nice strats recently). For me what struck me was the amount of "character" inherent in the instrument. This Tyler has a really warm and woody tone, very vocal, I've had it 4 years now and haven't found myself "wanting" for the right strat since. My taste leans towards the darker strat sounds, Blackmore, Gilmour, Hendrix (at times), Bolin and I also love the PAF bridge sound....The body wood on this one is mamywo, I've heard conflicting stories where mamywo has been called "Hawaiian Alder" or the mahogany of Southeast Asia. Whatever the case is this is quite the darker/warmer sounding strat.............My other Tyler I'd say is more vintage-ish in terms of what people consider classic clean strat tones. That one is alder/maple.

YMMVReminds me of my school days...the good old days of everybody wanting have their "individual style"...yet it had to conform.
I never minded the Tyler head stock. And I remember them as the guitars I couldn't afford when they still had a Strat headstock. But lets look at it the other way around, if we all were used to Jim's headstock shape would we dislike the original Strat one?
Then what do I know...I still have some Steinbergers and they don't even have a head stock.

I got into the Tyler headstock from watching Mike Landau playing his Burning Water way before they became popular.
As far as ugly headstocks, IMO look no further than the Suhr.

Tom Anderson's thoughts on Jelutong ...
"gel-you-tong. it is a very soft wood that a promenent small maker calls another name. it was part of a test alan holdsworth did back in the 80's where he had charvel make three guitars. one basswood, one jelutong and one i can't remember. the basswood won, and that was the beginning of the basswood craze. i never made any real guitars out of jelutong it is really, really soft, and i thought it didn't have any bottom."
about the headstock being the way it is? Perhaps it is big to balance a light body? What do these guitars weigh in at?

Anywho.....Whatever anyone may think proof is in the pudding, My Tyler sounds gorgeous. Plenty of bottom end as well, more than most strats. That could be anything though, I have a feeling that the finish on this guitar plays a critical part in it's sound.

I wouldn't describe it as light, but then again I need to get my beer swilling fat-ass into a gym. It certainly is balanced well. More mass at the headstock can certainly improve sustain, but I don't know if that's the case here.

ed, You ever check out Parkers? I went through a phase with those, I had an awesome Supreme that I regret selling, I made 2x what I bought it for, but I miss the guitar............I sold it after I got this Tyler, but hindsite being 20/20 for recording they really do some things other guitars can't. On a good one the sustain is ridiculous as well as how tight they sound, really good for low end chugin'.
I look forward to trying out a tyler sometime.

Ahhh great - a Tyler thread. Time for a little showing off....
Meet Minty... it's something of a pornstar... this is the actual guitar that Guitarist Magazine reviewed in 2004 and called one of the best guitars they had ever had in for review. Heck, the reviewers hands are in the case.... I wonder how the rest of him is?! :D

I have never been wild about the headstock truth be told but...
When I played Steve Fryette's Mongoobastar T (sp?) I could have cared less. That guitar sounds like a freight train.
Besides... I think his paint jobs are some of the most unique in the biz.
At somepoint I would really like to have one of Jim's guitars.
I drool over the Studio Elite Deluxe.
or
a Classic Custom in Red Schmear or Hazmat.

But I'M not buying one, so if YOU feel that they float your boat, then more power to ya. ;)

I think the headstocks on the Tyler is by far the worst looking I've ever seen. BUT WHO CARES . I also think the Suhr headstock is ugly . BUT these are great guitars I'm sure. Dave doesn't like the headstock or the Schmear.. I absolutely LOVE the Schmear and Psychedelic vomit bodies.. Cool as hell , and I wish WAY MORE guitars would get into creative art bodies. I have a bunch of 1 of a kind guitars and always love to be different than everyone and their brother who play guitars..................

Don't have to worry about any of those in my house.. My only coffee table I have I've had since I was 21 about 25 years ago , and it cost me 100.00. I've invested NO money in my totally basic ranch house or furniture ever, but have great guitar and pa stuff. I love Ibanez , Fender , old Robin hammer-type , Kramer Baretta, Robin headstocks etc (not the pointies but the hammer types) , and my favorite ever is the Robin Machete V! Next favorite I think are Brian Moore headstocks. Headstocks on Driskills , Tylers, Suhrs, etc are not my cup of tea at all. BUT that doesn't mean I wouldnt buy one based on a headstock.. If the guitar kicked ass and was in my pricerange I'd still buy it. I have a Time Guitar from when I used to work there that is a strat shape but the body is finished sort of like a yellow /orange tie dye. I love that sucker, but people call it my TideBox guitar!!! I have a 1off Ibanez metallic green with gold pickguard w/ 2 snakes covering the whole neck.. Tacky as hell ,but I love it. My prettiest are a Robin Savoy , and an Ibanez that was completely altered by George Kirkwood? (In Washington State) that I bought thru ebay for 650.00.. It has cocobola wood intermingled with a purple body and led's up the fretboard, etc. and cocobola and abalone on the headstock .AWESOME!!!! Anyway , carry on , and hopefully I can see what the Tyler's are about someday! ERIC

ERICThe tyler headstocks aren't too bad but the logo is way over done.
The Shur headstock looks like there was no effort at all put in to it's design. It looks very last minute like someone said "Hurry and design a headstock! You've got 5 minutes!". It's the most plain looking headstock I've ever seen on a Fender style. There is just nothing going on there
If you want the ugly award look at the Driskill.
If I liked the guitar well enough I could get used to most headstocks. I used to dislike the PRS headtock and now I love them.
