I posted this also on TGP, need suggestions:

I've been thinking about a secondary/backup amp for playing. I currently use my Rivera Rake head and a recto 2x12 cab. I love it. My setup works for me.

So when my current setup "works", I obsess over something else, guitars, other amps, etc. Having played live for over 20 years, and only having an amp crap out on me 1 time, I'm still anal about backup gear. I'm trying to decide on what amp to get as my "backup".

My head says: "It doesn't really matter, it's a BACKUP, you'll probably never use it, and it's only to get you through a week or two. Don't spend alot of money".

My heart says: "When I play my guitar, I need to have the BEST gear, no matter if it's the "A" rig or "B" rig, and I'll only be satisfied with the best".

I also don't have the kind of cash to buy a $1500.00 amp that just sits, "just in case". My Rake cost me $700.00, so remember that. I've been thinking about a 1x12 combo, that way, I could really use the thing in certain rooms, not just as a "backup". Any suggestions?

I'll list the amps that don't work for me personally:

Mesa F series - Don't like the gain channel
Peavey Classics - had one, I'm over it, I like separate EQ
Mesa Rectoverb - I actually like it, but it's heavy and not THAT cheap
Rivera R series - Not enough low end, kind of thin sounding.

P.S. - It's gotta be all tube, two channel, FX loop. Go ahead, spend my money!

How about a M-series Rivera? Like a M-60.

How about a Koch Twintone 1x12 combo? I just picked one up and love it, it's got a Weber Blue Dog in it. Everything you desire, plus 50 down to 25 watts by swapping speaker jacks, headphone out, reverb, and line out. You can probably get a used one at the top end of your price range. Great tone...

Not a bad idea, Ahab, you too.

I definitely like a head/cab sound much better, maybe I should just get a backup/alternate head like an M-series.

Baba, the only logical thing to do is get a Shiva head, and make it your main gigging amp, and use the Rake for the stand-by rig. That way, the lesser costing amp is your back-up(think Jeri will buy that one?)

Always here to help, Allan.

I had the same problem and got the Shiva. Great investment and can't beat the tone of both channels.

Allan, you REALLY want me to get a Shiva, don't you??? :D

Brutha, if I could afford it, I'd think about it in a heartbeat, but it's not in the cards.

Baba, I just picked up an Egnater TOL50 for $700. 1-12', sounds great.

Now my next one is a steal if you can find a clean one. Seymour Duncan Convertibles (100, not 60) can be found for around $300 on ebay. I paid 3X that new back when, and this amp still kills. The guys in the band ask me to take this one out to gigs all the time, and my main amp is a Jake!

Good luck,

Izzy
