Hi I have a PRS CU22 AP. I am wondering if there is a safe way to remove the lacquer from the neck? Is it possible to restore the lacquered finish afterwards without too much effort?

I think I remember reading on an older forum about a 3M product which was like a synthetic sponge. This product would remove the lacquer, but the finish could be restored by buffing with a polish cloth.

Am I remembering correctly and if so, can someone direct me to that 3M product, or anything similar that will do the trick?

Thanks,
Kyle

Wasn't it Micro Mesh or something like that?

Micromesh doesn't remove the finish completely, it just makes the finish satiny.

If you're looking to get down to bare wood, you might want to think twice. First, unlike rosewood, mahogany needs a finish for protection. A mahogany neck can lose stability due to moisture absorbtion if left unfinished. That doesn't mean your neck will necessarily warp if left stripped but more frequent truss rod adjustments are probably to be expected.

Refinishing a stripped mahogany neck could be tricky. Unlike nitro, the poly finish on your Custom is hard to blend. It can be done but not as easily as on, say, a Les Paul.

I think MicroMesh was the product. I am not looking to totally strip the neck just thinking about trying something a little different with the lacquer finish. I have very oily hands and the lacquer can get a little sticky some times. Thanks for your help guys and gals.
