UK BAM and GEAR PAGE MEMBERS
You are cordially invited to our second FORUM MEET in my school this April. Since the demise of the PRS Forum, the event will not be officially advertised as a PRS event, but you know what we mean!
SUGGESTED DATES- SAT 3RD APRIL OR SAT 17TH APRIL. Either side of Easter weekend.
So, please email me or this thread so we can get going with a suitable date.
Members who have recently joined the forum(s) - my school is 10 mins from the M6/M58 junction - in Skelmersdale, East of Liverpool.
Last year, members stayed over in Southport, just 30 mins away.
More details will of course follow, but let me know if a particular date is more suitable.
Cheers, and many thanks to Phil for allowing us a 'sticky' thread so you won't miss details etc.

Hi Guys,

Sorry about the delay, but i have had a bit on my mind lately. Things are all very well, you may have heard that I have been a little unwell, and after my x-rays and blood tests on Monday, can report that all is very good.

As you know, we have arrived home around September and four months later all our gear arrived from the UK, so we have just about finished setting up home. I still have not set up my office properly so all my toys are still packed away, but I have had my BRW McCarty out a few times to play.

Because I was a little unwell, I had initially only been working three days a week, and as of a few weeks ago, I am now working four days a week. The job is in Canberra, the capital of Australia. Canberra is a nice place, but it is what could only really be described as a large town, and is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It is about 540 km round trip from my home in Sydney to Canberra, so I stay down for three nights. This is not ideal, but has some benefits in that I have been very good and have found a nice guitar teacher, who's lessons have been quite good and because I try not to watch the idiot box, have been quite good at practicing.

My family are fabulous, both Charlotte and Miles are enjoying being home and with there cousins and grand parents, both are also at great schools, which they are enjoying. Fiona, my wife is doing very well and has started doing some editing work for PHD students and one of the journals from the University.

I really wish that I could be at the 2nd UK forum meeting, shall miss what shall be a great event, miss the friendship and all the nice equipment.

Look after yourself,

David

Guys,

If I could make it to the meeting, I would be taking my early 70's Noyce (local Australian builder) Stratocaster copy. I have just had this hot rodded in a very 80's way, boy it's hard to change decades sometime, by putting in Kinman Vintage pickups and a cornell classic plus pre-amp. This baby now really overdrives my early 80's Fender 30 valve amp. I really would like to see Barry's McRosie, and Mr Gits new Santana, so what other goodies are coming to the meeting...

I also see that a theme song for the the event has not been chosen. Can I make a few suggestions, Black Magic Woman, Ace of Spades, The forrest by the cure, or alternatively anything by the Nolan Sisters or Dr Hook!

And don't forget to post pictures!

Regards

David

Me and half of Kevin! Rog's place Oct 2003

Hi folks,

First update for those who can come along:

SAT 17TH APRIL 2004

COBBS BROW SCHOOL
MANFIELD
ASHURST
SKELMERSDALE
LANCS WN8 6SU

Tab into AA or RAC routemaps, enter post code and you're here.
Alternatively, tab into Mapstart, enter post code and you will be able to load overhead pics of what the place looks like!!

For those who like plain English:

Take Junction 4 - turn RT along Glenburn Rd - it's a Dual carriageway.
at Roundabout, go straight on, still on same Rd.
At huge HALF MILE Roundabout, turn RT - up Houghtons Rd.

About 150 yds, come to R'about - turn LEFT - into Ashmead RD.

ROB OWENS HOME PHONE: 01704 877099
ROB OWENS MOBILE: 07712 589664
SCHOOL PHONE: 01695 720632

TURN UP FROM 10.30am ish.
We'll go on till about 5.00pm

There are other places to stay, but I suggest Southport for a venue as it is only 30 mins away and is offers a wide variety of things to do either in the day or evening.

SOUTHPORT
Those who stayed last year had the choice in the evening of going to a live band - think it was '9 below zero'!!
However, we all met in a restaurant and then ended up in a local pub.
Southport is really nice and the walk along Lord St and/or the Prom is a pleasant experience.

Tab in Southport Hotels on Google.
The Stutelea is central and next to Lord St. £80 ish for a twin room
Carleton House is same position almost but cheaper - £40/50 for twin room
Scarisbrick is big, has plenty of night life/bars, but may be noisier. £80 ish for twin room - just check prices on net or look their phone numbers up.

Any members who stayed last year can advise others on this thread - you may want to arrange rooms between you??

SAT DAY TIME:
I haven't arranged anything in particular, but there are a number of rooms, plus the hall to play - go test/compare amps/guitars etc.

If you have any ideas then do please send them along.

If you would like to bring a friend, then string a guitar round his neck, but I can't have Joe public, the rest of the family or children in. All to do with health and safety insurance.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day and members will be asked to leave a small donation towards them.

If you would like to bring along items for a bring and buy, then fine - just remember you'll need to have items priced. Gary Nattrass will, hopefully be showing us his new guitar range!!!! - he also has a Sadowsky Strat for sale - so bring you pennies.

You'll also need to bone up on Smoke on..... you'll find out why!

Please send me any further questions or requests asap.

Cheers,
Rob

Hotel rates have changed slightly. I have booked into Carleton House and it's costing me £130 for two nights (Fri, Sat). Stutelea was considerably dearer, approx £130 per night.

I will be bringing the two JGN Guitar prototypes:

1: Thinline Tele with swamp ash body and flame cherry S/B maple top, Maple vintage finished neck with rosewood board, EMG 89 Humbuckers and black hardware.

2: Hollow Strat with alder body and quilt maple top in tri sunburst, birdseye maple satin neck with ebony board and stainless steel frets, EMG SA's and gold hardware.

There are two more guitars on order one of which is my own spalted maple topped strat but I don't think they will be ready for the 17th.
And a 1987 PRS CU24.

Amp wise I am bringing my Session valve 15/30 combo.

Don't really know as yet - but we're sure to have a collection of Boogies - hope Mark S brings his Mk4 again - it's a beauty - then there's the DC5's from Newcastle way - maybe we'll get a Fender this year - not one appeared last year!

I think folks will be keen to see the new PRS models - not sure who has them yet - maybe yours will be the first.

Sorry Mr Git, but for some reason in my tiny brain I had it fairly sorted that you were getting one of the new Brazillian Santana's, why I don't know because I thought that the combination of your playing and the Santana/Mesa Boogie sounded so right.

I had a another series of check ups and injections today for my six monthly check and I can report that my doctor says all is very good, in fact he says that my recovery has been pretty remarkable. I guess that I have been one of the very lucky ones!

I am still looking at getting a Mesa Boogie, but they are pretty dear here in Oz, a second hand MK II in pretty average condition is $1500 or around 650 UK Pounds. I played one in a shop today and it was a nice amp, but the sound was so punchy it almost blew my toupie clear off!

Really wish I could be there for the event, have a good time and take lots of photos!

I tried the quilt topped hollowed out ST and thought it was fantastic. In fact if it wasn't for having 3 STs and a minor income anomoly I would have been tempted to buy it. Throughly recommended.

Re the cameras, Kevin and I bought Canon 300Ds when we were in the US. My group shot was taken with that camera and a 50mm 1.4 lens with direct flash on a tripod (and mad dash back to the stage). Unfortunately I was too busy noodling to take any other pics.

The sausage story, how do I explain this, it may be one of those stories where you had to be there? Here goes....... we had just left the pub and as we all know, after a few beers the body craves food, you know the feeling, even when the stuff you normally wouldn't touch if you were sober, suddenly tastes delicious, not quite the case here as the chips tasted very nice.... so were walking down the street and we come to a Fish'n'chip shop, in we all go and i ask for saveloy, it appeared that they had never heard of saveloys and was offered fish cakes?? To those who are not sure what a saveloy is, it looks like a sausage but it isn't a sausage if you get my meaning, it's about 8 to 10 inches long, it's the same shape as a sausage but with a different skin and texture, so there was this rather tasty object that appeared through my beer affected vision to be a Saveloy, but when I enquire it's actually a SAUSAGE and not a saveloy!!! and believe me there is a difference..... I hope that's helped....:) I did say you had to be there?

I will wait under Canon actually start shipping some real cameras to joe public...US deliveries start 3 May according to a (very) trusted source.

I have got a 4Gb drive ready....actually works in the 1D if you don't format it.

BTW I think the 50mm1.4 you have is a bargain of a lens....
takes very dramatic shallow DOf shots

Hi all,

Well it seems like this thread is more popular after the event than before!!! Strange but true.
Sorry to have missed your Santana Ainsley - Never got over it from last year!!

We went to see a great little blues band 'Bluebox' on Sat eve...but in a really sleazy pub....guess that's where blues bands hang out!! The ladies (of the night) impressed John though and the Blues 'sisters' in the pork pie hats impressed all of us!!

After we came out.....Colin simply asked a bad tempered little bugger serving in the chippy - 'eer mate, wot's one of those called?'....'It's a F*****g sausage' came the reply!!!...... no smile or anything......hahaha very funny at the time!!

Ian's Valvetronix was impressive and about half the price of line 6 Vetta!!!
Mark's P/S's were beautiful - so were his amps.
We tried an A/B test - my older Toneking -v- his new one.
Clean channels were very close indeed - I couldn't tell any difference, but lead channel - the new one overdrives at lower vol, so you don't NEED a pedal particularly - you do with mine. Interesting to compare the boogies too - pity they are so bloody heavy!!!

Well thanks to those who came along - my three prof guitarist pals who came for an 'hour' stayed all day in fact - they were really impressed.

See you all next year - although we may be invited up to Durham way later in the year?? (Gary??) and possibly down south to Rog's place....who knows...
See ya...

It's nice to hear that Colin enjoyed a bit of old fashioned Northern hospitality on Sat evening. It seems that there are some universal Chip Shop truths that will never change. One of them is that no-one north of Watford will ever know what a Saveloy is. The corollary is that you'll never find mushy peas darn Sarf.

Thanks again to Rob for organising the day, it was great to catch up with the familiar faces and also to meet some new ones. It's a great opportunity to see and hear some gear that I would never normally find around here. Thanks to everyone for bringing their prized toys along for us all to ogle. It's a pity that Phil and Ainsley couldn't make it - maybe next time?

Here's my personal highlights from the day:

Joke of the day: "Play a Jazz chord".

Mark's PS guitars: Marvellous looking instruments (but both lefties, dammit).

Toneking amps: Rob's Imperial & Mark's Comet side by side. The sound has changed a little bit in the newer model, but I love 'em both.

JGN guitars: Gary's guitars are the business. Could this man be the UK's answer to Tom Anderson?

Gary's little John Phillips Special amp. I just didn't expect such a great noise from such a small box. I can only wonder what it must sound like through a good 4x12.

Kevin's Les Paul Historic reissue: Lovely. The weight of every other LP I've ever picked up has put me off them - until now.

Colin's Boogie Nomad: Now I know why Santana uses one of these as his backup amp - hit the lead channel and there's that sound. I couldn't stop myself attempting some dodgy Carlos-style widdling over Colin's backing tracks.

This was the first time I've played the Valvetronix at volume up against some pretty serious valve/tube amps. I was pleased that it didn't sound out of place and had enough volume to keep up with those Boogies. I still think a good tube amp is better sounding, but the VT is a flexible, tidy and very usable solution (and the pedalboard impresses the casual onlooker, too).

No magic spray! I use touch-up spray paint for my car! My car has metallic paint and the touch up paint comes in 2 parts: base paint and lacquer. I use the laquer bit on the back plates. Put a couple of layers on and it works a treat.

for those of you who had Mesa's at the meet. They all sounded great I'm thinking of getting rid of my Marshall and dipping my toes into Mesa-land and have some questions:

Which models did you have?
Are casters an option? (thinking of my frail body)
Why did you buy that particular model?
Where did you get it?
Approx price? (got to think of pennies with wife, 3 dogs, 2 grown-up children, 2 grandchildren & multiple guitars to support)

Any answers would be appreciated, playing an open air gig at end of May and would love to ***s off the local residents:D

I know I couldn't make it John but i know a lot of the guys are using DC 5's and Mark IV's.
For me the DC5 is the better sounding amp, a much warmer clean channel and I think the gain channel is smoother and better too. The Mark IV has a few more bells and whistles and a canny pedalboard/footswitch for more control but to me they just sound a bit lacking.
I played through Marks Mark IV last year and although it was a canny amp I didn't think it was worth the extra few hundred quid compared to a DC5. Myself, Gary, Phil and Ian all use DC5's and Kev has a DC 3 now (not sure what he thinks of it ?), Colin has an F30 or F50 and that's a cracking amp too.
I like nothing better than a high gain amp, smooth with bags of sustain yet crunchy too but for me the selling point of the DC5 is the clean channel. It's just so warm and woody it totally inspires you, sounds great with my McCarty Archtop,CU22, Santana II, BLE McCarty and my tele(you get the idea).
Castors you can fit yourself or fix some to a board, not a problem.
Prices ? well they range from £450/£500 if you're lucky to around £650, I think I paid £625 for mine, I can't remember. Phil Bennet found mine for me at The Academy Of Sound just after he'd bought his in Leeds, shortly after we'd heard Gary's  Gary has got a lot to answer for, he is the DC5 guru :D

As for your open air gig, you need one of these for definate :D

OOPS :(
Forgot to say John, It's two channel (footswitchable) with a pull 'boost' on the clean side, a mod is available to make this footswitchable too, five band graphic eq and reverb for each channel, these are also footswitchable.
It's also got a canny FX loop, I run my chorus, delay, tremelo, tuner in the loop and my overdrive,eq (not really used) and Dan'O' wah into the front.

I think amp wizard John Phillips uses one too :dude:

Have a scout about though mate as they crop up all over the place, eBay, Loot and the guitar shops.

I've got a DC-3 (the little brother of the DC-5). I previously had a Marshall DSL-401 (EL-84's), the DC-3 also uses EL-84's.

I like the DC-3 a lot! It does everything I want, 2 channel, switchable, fx loop. switchable graphic EQ and reverb as well.

It sounds great on cleans, and it's got plenty of poke on the dirty channel for me too.

I picked it up secondhand for £390.

There's usually a few DC-5/Mk iv's going in the readers ads on sound on sound. Worth taking a look.

You got a great bargain, what a sound for £390!! My amp is actually a Nomad 45 2x12, and I paid £550 from a friend a couple of years ago, but they seem to sell between £650-£750, I really like the the sound overdriven, and it's a got a lovely clean jazzy tone, but for a Fender type guitar clean sound I still think the Fender amps, Twins and the Hot Rod Deville I used to own take some beating.

I guess someone has to put a word in for the Mark IV. I personally have never been able to get the lead articulation I want out of the above amps. I don't know whether its because of the way the Volumes cascade on the MK series but I seem to be able to dial in exactly the gain structure I want. The clean channel is awesome to my ears, especially with a Strat. The EV speaker is the thing that gives it its dry tone; that people love or hate and if you dont like it you can always put a Celestion in there. The MKIV has been in continuous production longer than any Boogie and has probably sold the most in volumes - I don't know what that tells you but it must say something.

Anyway you seem like an intelligent chap - try them all and make your own mind up.

Thanks for the info chaps. Been looking on the MESA site, apparently the DC series has been discontinued and replaced with the F series i.e. F30 = DC3, F50= DC-5. I know you could probably get hold of the DC series, eBay etc, however, as Roger says, I will test the F-series and perhaps the Mark series. Hopefully both my ears and wallet will say the F- series, rather than a Mark IV. I'll let you know in a few weeks what I get, if anything

I would also recomend the DC5 for the simple reason that it just sounds fuller than any of the other Mesa amps. I was going to trade mine for a Mk4 but glad I didn't as the wide body cab and the circuit is just right.

One other thing is I wanted to part X my Marshall amp, just to get it out of the way. Can't really be bothered with eBay to sell the Marshall, especially as it is fairly heavy etc.

I've been looking at info on the F-50, which is supposed to be the replacement for the DC5, and according to the Guitarist review, it weighs 25 Kg, which is 3Kg lighter than my Marshall AVT150.

However Rob, if you are trying to corner the UK market in castors, that's fine by me. Put my name down for one, alongside Kevin's.

Better add Ainsleys as well, he's obviously too embarrased to ask. :D

Hi,

CASTORS:
I've been throwing out some old cupboards/trolleys in school recently. They all came with castors - all with roller bearings. The wheels are about 2 1/2" in diameter, so are fine for amps. I had some on my 110 lb Tremoverb and they worked really well. They have static for most of their life so run beautifully with a bit of oil added. Couldn't see them thrown out!!
So, I have about 4 sets with more available - most with screws as well. Send me your address by email, together with a donation towards p and p and they are yours.

Boogie Amps - the older ones are far better made - go to the AMP site and ask for info - you'll get it by the bucketload!!!

Love the Boogie midrange sound myself John. I don't know much about the range after the MKIV. I'd be very confident about a MK2,3 or 4 being reliable and hence buying second hand - of which there are some killer deals going on from what i've seen. The Mk2 had some considerable changes to the pre-amp circuit as did the Mk3. I like the Mk4 in the respect that you can pretty much dial in a setting specifically for each chanel - though I'm sure that the roadking would probably do this better (?) My Mk3 I like, the only slight thing that I'm not hat happy with is you can find a scenario where you might have to compromise is settings between chanel switching. Watch out for people who are letting one go with an extension cab. I got one seperate but 2nd hand and this adds a nice thickness to the tone (theile (spelling?) cab).

Thanks Ainsley, I was actually checking these out on the weekend, along with the F-50 and Mark series. Spent nearly all weekend in fact, much to my missus' dislike!!

They all seem to have good reviews. I think it's probably going to be down to what my ears and instinct tells me this coming weekend.

Whilst, I'm not necessarily averse to trying to get a DC5 from say eBay, I do prefer the more comforting ease of mind that buying from a shop can bring. I think with Coda, it depends on who you get to serve you and which shop you go to. I agree they do stack them high. I always go to Stevenage, which I think is better than Luton and always talk to the guy who owns the shop. Not sure of his name, but he's the more mature guy, who is quite a good player himself. When I bought the CU24 last Dec, he allowed me to spend most of the afternoon trying out, whatever I wanted. He didn't hover trying to speed you up etc. Probably main complaint is the size of the shop, it is a bit small upstairs. But if you can grab yourself a corner, ideally on the left at the top of the stairs, next to the PRS, your'e OK.

Never been to Machinehead, so cannot comment.

Maybe I should give Coda another chance, regarding Machine Head I find them really helpful and friendly, and the bloke who owns the shop seems a genuinely nice bloke. The shop isn't the biggest, It's set on different floors, but the acoustic section has stacks of room.

Machinehead is marginally worse :(

I prefer Coda Stevenage (even though it's a squeeze getting in there)! I know this won't help John, but I'd recommend avoiding the place on a Saturday — it's definitely preferable to go mid-week. I agree, you can spend as long as you like trying everything you want, without any hassle at all (except for finding space).

John, shouldn't you wait and go to the Wembley show before deciding?

Just to add my two cents worth, I have to agree that I liked Coda at Stevenage. They were very cool and let me sit there for a few hours trying out Les Pauls before I became interested in PRS's. Always very nice.

By the way the event sounded liek it was great fun, wish I was there.

We wished you were there too Dave, nice to know that even though you're the other side of the world you're staying in contact, now that's what I call cool. We take the internet for granted at times.

I agree Coda is a bit of a pig for parking, especially if your'e thinking of buying amps.

I can't make the London Show, promised the Missus to go shopping and I think we have the granchildren as well

I assume you are an ex Brit, otherwise parking is not the issue, it's the bl**dy long drive:)

John,

No, I am an aussie who lived in Towcester for two years and was lucky enough to by a lovely Brazilian McRosie and used that as my entrance ticket for the first UK Forum. But you are right, it was a long drive to Stevenage from Towcester!

I like your website.

Hi Guys
You know I once suggested having a UK specific place to post but the idea was poo poo'd. So here's to 50 page threads for the foreseeable (whatever that means) future...... :)

I agree with you. I know some might say having specific places for people to post, such as UK specific place, is a bit too elitist etc, however, in some cases, there are benefits in having them. On the Fender Forum, they have specific threads for the various amp, such as 'The Blues Jr Mafia - Stand up and be Counted'. This thread now has 3330 posts (as at today), and contains a wealth of information about the Blues Junior Amp. Ok, I don't necessarily agree with the corny names that people have allocated for their particular amp threads, but they are extremely useful.

Perhaps rather than ask for a particular section, which may put us apart from our World cousins, we just start a thread, in the Guitars from Maryland sections. We could give it a nice simple, not too corny, name such as 'The UK Chapter', which is then easy to find, should the thread be off the first page or so.

At least we would have a nice easy to find thread that the dozen or so UK members could use to communicate with each other. As you suggested it, perhaps, you should be the first person to post on the thread.

What do you think Guys?
